Last Meeting- Nov. 28th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Terry Jones. Terry’s guest speaker was Jason Brando with Hillsborough County Sherriff Office Forensic Services and Crime Scene Investigations unit. The Crime Scene Investigation unit is a 12 person unit that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is made up of sworn detectives and civilian investigators. The average experience of these investigators is 10 years or more. The unit continually trains on new techniques and technology through forensic conferences to masters degree level education. Beside criminal investigations the unit provides education service to the community and through classes at HCC. Hillsborough County investigative services is equipped with some of the newest technologies available including DNA processing. LODIS is the local DNA testing database that is unique to Hillsborough county and NIBIN is a database for known and unknown ballistics testing in the county. NIBIN tests for casing’s, spent shells, projectiles and bullets to compare and determine weapons usage in committing crimes. HCSO has a “shoot tank” developed to casings research using 3D imaging technology and match point analysis. With this information and trajectory laser investigation they can reconstruct a shooting scene with great accuracy. Fingerprint analysis is another area that HCSO is highly advanced in through technology. Shoe prints can be pulled from carpet and tile using different processes that are available. Chemical tests for finding blood, semen and saliva are widely used in investigations. All traces of blood are never erased from a crime scene. Clues left on people, contact wounds, gunshot residue, tool impressions and even teeth marks are commonly used in an investigation. Through thorough documenting of a crime scene, all the variables can be inputted into a CAD system and a 3D virtual crime scene can be developed for court cases and investigations. Autopsies are also commonly used to help reconstruct crime scenes. HCSO is “top of the line” when it comes to investigations. -submitted by Mike Arndt

Thanks to all the Rotarians that helped at the Christmas Parade. 1000 hot dogs, chips and drinks were served to hungry parade participants at the end of the parade. Rotarians report email scam
Some Rotarians have reported receiving a scam email asking them to click a link to update names and contact information in a directory. The email, which stems from a gmail account, is not from Rotary.

Arch Klumph’s hometown raises over $2 million through centennial celebration
Rotary members in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, celebrated 100 years of The Rotary Foundation on 23 October with a banquet and a concert by The Cleveland Orchestra that have so far raised more than $2.1 million for the Foundation's next century of good work. Arch Klumph, a Cleveland Rotarian, planted the seed for The Rotary Foundation in 1917, with his idea of having an endowment fund dedicated to "doing good in the world."
