Last week's program was provided by Rotarian Kyle Robinson. Kyle’s guest speaker was Hillsborough County State Attorney, Andrew Warren. The State Attorney is an official who is elected every four years. Andrew Warren was sworn in as State Attorney of Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit, Hillsborough County, on January 3, 2017, after being elected in November of 2016. Mr. Warren previously served as a federal prosecutor with the United States Department of Justice in Tampa, FL, and Washington, DC. After prosecuting street crime as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia in 2008, Mr. Warren spent the majority of his career at the Justice Department prosecuting complex white collar crime, including investment fraud, Medicare fraud, and corporate corruption. Among other high-profile cases, he successfully prosecuted Robert Allen Stanford and other executives at Stanford Financial Group for orchestrating one of the largest frauds in history, a $7 billion Ponzi scheme. Andrew H. Warren , along with Assistant State Attorneys, prosecutes criminals throughout our county, encompassing the city of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City. Article V, Florida Constitution, and Section 27, Florida Statutes, along with various other statutes, set out the authority and guidelines for the office of the State Attorney. The staff of approximately 352 includes more than 120 attorneys, 12 investigators and a dedicated support staff. The office believes in being very involved in community interests. The staff plays a part in numerous community-related committees and non-profit organizations. The Mission is to ensure that justice is accomplished in all matters relating to the prosecution of criminal offenses. While we must remain vigorous in guarding the rights of all individuals who have contact with the criminal justice system, the protection of the citizens of Hillsborough County shall be our foremost consideration in whatever task we are pursuing. We will also zealously advocate for the rights of victims of crimes committed within our jurisdiction. The Sate Attorney office has a great working relationship with the Hillsborough County Sherriff Department and work very closely to ensure the safety of the citizens of Hillsborough County. The mission to build a safer community through crime prevention is key. Expanding diversion programs through drug enforcement court and mental health court which is currently the biggest issue facing our community. Juvenile mental health court, juvenile court and the juvenile civil citation program are just a few new programs that have recently been implemented to help keep kids out of the system and out of trouble. Domestic violence and working with adults in the system because of poverty, making it hard to be a “law-abiding” citizen, are current issues the office is working on. Community outreach is important to the office as “transparency develops trust”.
Preparations are underway for the our club's second biggest fundraiser of the year. We need everyone to pitch in for this great event. Sponsorship opportunities are available and needed.
