September 24 wrapup

Getting started. New member Brent Painter gave the invocation to get the September 24 meeting underway. As the flag was dragged in mid-phrase, President Gerald Balint led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests. Our guest students were members of the Strongsville High School Homecoming Court, with advisor Carol McKnight. The court included Sarah Gootee, Amy Donahoe, Divya Raj and Brianna Horn. Our exchange student, Brenda Castelan, of Mexico, updated the club about her week.

Thanks. The club received letters of thanks from the Strongsville Food Bank for last week's contribution of $137, and from Jennifer Dumm, for inviting her to speak last week about her non-profit organization, John Owen's Adventure. Jen's son John has been diagnosed with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, a terminal disease.
A Taste in Strongsville. Rochelle Theuner said about 350 tickets have been sold for the club's Savor the Flavor event, to be held on Sunday, October 10. The event will feature samplings from some of the area's best restaurants, like Trivs, Pomeroy House, Sweet Mango, Shinto and the Silver Mustang. In all, 30 restaurants will participate.Tickets cost $35 each, or, get a table of 10 for $300. Each ticket enters you into a Grand Prize Raffle Drawing. You can order tickets right online and your tickets will be waiting at the door. Go to www.tasteofstrongsville.com to order or to get more information.

Membership moment. Val Tocci, new member Czarina, said a new member class will be held on the third Wednesday of each month. This used to be a breakfast over to the Gourme, but it recently has been moved into a classroom type setting in order to induce sleep. Val says if you see a new member walking around aimlessly at a meeting, invite them to join your table.
Membership moment 2. Bob Berendsen said our club and the rest of Rotary is always looking for ways to trick new people into joining. One of the ways we do that is to indoctrinate them while they're young. When they're in third grade we give them dictionaries. We also sponsor the Interact Club at the high school and participate in Rotary Youth Leadership camps and host exchange students. Finally, the district holds an annual Four Way Test speech contest. These activities build up interest for future Rotarians.
Pictures for an Exhibition. Damon Galt is putting together a Strongsville Rotary display to be displayed wherever displays are displayed - like at the upcoming Strongsville Business Expo. So if you have any Rotary photos of events or activities that would be appropriate for the display, please send them to Damon.
Nawleans. Jack Miaskowski noted the the 2011 annual Rotary International Convention will be held May 21-25 in New Orleans. The dates were moved up a few weeks to get a jump on hurricane season. If you have never attended an international conference, consider going to this one. It's nearby and will be a highlight of your lifetime Rotary experience, Jack said. Mapleside. The September 22 Family Night event at Mapleside drew 38 people. Ashley Gay, who coordinated the event with Brian Allen, said those who attended had a great time.
Dikshinaries. The club held its annual Dictionary Project distributions to all third grade kids in Strongsville public schools along with Sts. Joseph and John on Monday, September 27. This Rotary tradition is part of our efforts to enhance literacy.
Clothing drive. With 22 days left in the annual clothing drive for the homeless, chairman Tom Snow said he's getting ready to cancel the collection of people don't start to bring in clothes. Yeah, right.
Cleanup. The annual fall cleanup at the Strongsville Historical Village will be held Saturday, October 2, from 9:00 until about noon. We're always done before noon. Then everybody can go over to clean up Bilo's. For question about the Historical Village cleanup, contact Tom Gigliotti.

Val Tocci filled in for LaPorta. 3. Brian Regiec, who fills our chiropractic void, sponsored by Jeff Ellis.
Food Bank Friday. Don't forget - this Friday is the first one of the month. That means it's Food Bank Friday. Be sure to bring in stuff for the Strongsville Food Bank before Tom Snow threatens to cancel it. The food bank needs jelly, spaghetti sauce and soup, preferably in separate containers.
Chili Open. The next Chili Open meeting will be held on October 6, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Strongsville Recreation Center. Vice chairmen and chairmen need to attend and be prepared to give appropriate reports. Anybody else interested in attending should be prepared to give inappropriate reports.
Happy Bucks. Julie Ann Sweet Buntin and John are celebrating their fifth anniversary. Handy Matt Surak and Nancy will celebrate their 30th in Disney World. Paul Richards started a matching fund to buy a Hooked on Phonics for President Jerry. Laurie Meister announced that the Arts in Strongsville's A Day at the Chalet, held September 19, drew a record 5,000 people. Rick Voigt said the Camp Cheerful festival will be held Saturday, October 23.
Indian dance. Professional dancer Sujatha Srinivasan entertained us with some traditional Indian dance and explained a bit about the art. Sujatha is an internationally renowned Bharathanatyam exponent, known for her classicism and creative choreography. She has learned the art under eminent gurus and as a performer, she has more than 25 years of performing experience. She has won many awards and titles in India and has participated in many major prestigious dance festivals in India and has presented her recitals in Sri Lanka, Paris, Geneva, Canada, apart from several cities in the USA, winning praise from the press and connoisseurs alike. She has to her credit many composer-oriented and thematic presentations.
Sujatha is the artistic director of Shri Kalaa Mandir - Center for Indian Performing Arts, which is one of the leading professional dance institutions in Ohio. Students undergo holistic training in Bharathanatyam. Sujatha's mission is to educate and enlighten students and audiences about the great art of Bharathanatyam. In addition, Sujatha is the mother of the 2010 Strongsville Rotary Four-Way Speach contest winner - Shryia Srinivasan.
