Presidents Message

The definition of the word IMPACT as per Webster Dictionary...The strong influence of one thing on another: A significant or major effect.

To the members of The Rotary Club of Newtown, please take a bow and a standing ovation.  For calendar year 2025, our club made a $47,000 impact in our footprint to various organizations and groups of need.  Just in December alone with our "December to Remember" facilitated by Paul Salvatore, we impacted over 1,600 Angel Tree donations to children and adults in need, cooked dinner at the Homeless Shelter, prepared Christmas food for the Homeless Shelter, Hotels on Route 1 in Bensalem/Route 13 in Bristol and served Breakfast for children and adults at our annual Breakfast with Santa.  This is what makes our club special and the beacon of light in our community.

At our dinner meeting a few days ago, we welcomed Tom McCarthy, the play by play announcer of our Philadelphia Phillies.  This was a well attended event of members and guests who enjoyed asking questions of Tom regarding the Phillies, his career with the team and his other announcing positions such as NFL football on CBS and college basketball.

This Wednesday January 14th, 2026 is our semi annual "Students of the Month lunch facilitated by Rob Brown.  Then on Wednesday January 21st, 2026, the club welcomes Cheryl Castro, the Executive Director and CEO of the Pearl S Bucks Foundation.  We will also have Committee Reports to present facilitated by Mick Petrucci, chair of the Rotary Board.

Please remember that our lunch fee is $16.00 and dinner fee is $25.00.  Joe Garvey and his staff make a scrumptious meal and would be happy to provide a take out care package as well.  I will also ask to make sure to register in advance for the meetings so we can provide Joe with an accurate number of attendees.

Club members, the floor is yours as we are looking for ideas related to speakers for our club.  Also, we are looking to put together a Speakers Committee which will help us in the planning of our meetings.  If anyone is interested, just send me an email at sec103ru85@gmail.com.

Happy New Year and a great 2026 for our club!  Service above self.

Steve Sabel
President, Rotary Club of Newtown, District 7430
Lunch Meeting - 1/14
Please join us at our Lunch meeting on Wednesday, January 14th at the American Legion.  This meeting will feature our annual "Students of the Month" recognition program as fellow Rotarian, Rob Brown, recognizes students from Council Rock School District for their outstanding achievements!  Lunch will be provided by Joe Garvey so bring $16 and let's enjoy this very special event!
Book Club - 1/18
Please join the Newtown Rotary Book Club as we read "My Friends" by the #1 New York Times bestselling author, Fredrdik Backman who also write "A Man Called Ove".  This is an unforgettably funny, deeply moving tale of four teenagers whose friendship creates a bond so powerful that it changes a complete stranger’s life twenty-five years later.  Our Book Club is open to anyone who loves to read and would enjoy the opportunity for some fellowship with a great group of people!  If you have any questions, please contact Laurel Collins at LAUREL8690@YAHOO.COM
Wreath Clean Up - 1/19
Please report to the Washington Crossing Veterans Cemetery on Monday, January 19th from 8:00-10:00am to retrieve wreaths from the graves of our veterans.  Please sign up below and contact Donna Miller at dmmbmw@aol.com if you have any questions.  Thank you in advance for helping out with this important service project!
Lunch Meeting - 1/21
Please join the Newtown Rotary Club in welcoming Cheryl M. Castro, President and CEO of Pearl S. Buck International, as our featured speaker at this week’s lunch meeting. Cheryl will share insights into the organization’s global mission and the impactful work being done to honor Pearl S. Buck’s legacy in education, child sponsorship, and cross-cultural understanding.  In addition, we'll get caught up on Club Happenings through our Committee Chair updates.  Bring $16 and enjoy a catered lunch from Joe Garvey.

Rotarians Welcome a Phillies Broadcaster!!!
Dinner Meeting - 1/7
We were absolutely thrilled to welcome well-known sports broadcaster Tom McCarthy to our Newtown Rotary Club dinner meeting last night! Tom was incredibly engaging, taking time to connect with everyone and showing genuine appreciation for the fans in the room. He shared his amazing journey to where he is today, a story filled with perseverance, passion, and hard work. In addition to being the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, Tom also broadcasts NFL games, college football, college basketball, and national MLB games. Hearing how his career evolved across so many sports truly resonated with our members. Thank you, Tom, for a memorable evening and for being such a gracious and inspiring guest! Special thanks to Rotarian Pete Manetas for introducing us to Tom and we also thank Mark Gola and John Fierko for attending in support of Tom as well. It was quite a night!!!
