May 2013, Newtown. The Newtown Interact Club has received the 2012- 2013 Rotary International Presidential Citation for high achievement in service projects locally and internationally.


Rotary District Governor Tony Jannetta presented the award. Newtown Rotary Club is the Rotary Sponsor of the Interact Club.

During the same ceremony, leaders of Interact presented a $2,000 check to the Regional Shelter Box Ambassador, Allan Syphers. The students raised the money through variety of fund raising events. Rick Rogers, The Newtown Rotary Advisor to the Interact Club congratulated the students: “You have shown real leadership and commitment to service and we appreciate your participation in several Rotary projects this year, as well as other community service projects you have undertaken.”

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.  

Shelter Box is a Rotary International project that deploys emergency housing and survival kit boxes to disaster struck areas (Like Haiti after the 2010 earth quake and Thailand after the 2004 Tsunami).

Rotary International is the world's first service club organization. Its more than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self”. The Newtown Rotary Club, founded in 1953, has served the local and international communities for 60 years.
