September 18, 2013: Bill Grafton - Stellwagen Alive!

The regular meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held on Wednesday, September 18th, at the Scituate Country Club.

Those present were Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Janice Brown, Michael Johnson, Joe Kelley, Joan Powers, Lucille Sorrentino, David Tompson, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.

Past President, Joe Kelley, convened the meeting at 6:30 PM and led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Joan Powers offered the Invocation.

The next SRC meeting on Wednesday, September 26th will feature CDR Tyrus Lemerande, USN.  Come and hear him as he speaks to us about Military Awareness and The Performing Arts.

We will be hosting The Senior Community Dinner at St. Luke’s Church on Sunday, September 22nd at 5:00 PM. Joe will be there at 1:00 PM and would like all participants to come as early as possible.  ALL ARE NEEDED TO MAKE THIS DINNER A SUCCESS.

Looking ahead, the meeting on October 2nd will be Club Night.  A Board Meeting at 5:30 PM will precede the regular meeting.  At that board meeting, Bernie will bring us up to date with a detailed treasurer’s report.  At the regular meeting following, all the committees will meet.  Please plan to be present to be a part of this initial meeting of your committee.

Connie Mitchell presented us with copies OF THE HISTORY OF SCITUATE ROTARY written by her late husband, Alden Mitchell.  Thank you, Connie, for this gift.

Joe presented a Rotary Moment to bring us up to date on the progress of the landscaping at The Michael Kelley School complete with a picture from Razia Jan.

The Foundation Grant Applications have to be submitted by October 1st.  Joe has completed the grant for The Michael Kelley School.

All is set with The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Marshfield for the trip to the Providence Bruins on Friday, October 18th.  SRC Members are sponsoring “angel tickets” to this game for the students.  SRC Members who travel to Providence, will have the opportunity to have dinner together before the game.  Because of the timing of this event, and to encourage SRC Members to attend, there will be no regular meeting on the preceding Wednesday, October 16th.

Joe and Bernie conducted Happy Sad Bucks and The Search for the Queen.  Lisa Tompson held the winning ticket, but the elusive queen is still up to her old tricks.

After a delicious dinner served by Maureen, we were fortunate to have Bill Fletcher, Bill Grafton, and John Williamson, from Stellwagen Alive! as our program speakers of the evening.  Stellwagen is A National Park Sanctuary off the coast of North America in the Atlantic Ocean.  These men are fishermen and scientists who are passionate about preserving our natural oceanic heritage.  They have banded together with local seafaring fishermen and in an Operation Sweep are cleaning the ocean floor of abandoned traps, various types of litter, and discarded debris.  Bill Fletcher kept the videos and power points running beautifully, and Bill Grafton and John Williamson spoke eloquently about their mission.  They presented us with beautiful maps of Stellwagen.  Thank you, Bill, Bill, and John.  We admire your commitment to this worthy endeavor.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
