What a stellar group President Bob got to welcome tonight, an awesome group of guests and the members of the South Shore Astronomical Society! Bob also gave a hearty thank you to William Clark for being our new Rotary Phone Book Chair, and the Club followed with a round of applause!

Treasurer Joe Kelley updated the club with the good news of net profits for the Pancake Breakfast of $4,322.92. Our most recent donations include:

  • South Shore Art Center $1,500
  • Scituate Maritime Center $1,500
  • Shelter Box $1,000
  • Surgery for Norman $500

Also pending is a contribution to the USO, as requested by Ben Summers, to go for our country's brave servicemen, especially to be remembered during the holidays.

Bill WOWed us both by bringing his wife, Joyce, and by his memories of being a Rotarian for 50 years, this very week. He joined Rotary in his hometown of Clinton, MA in October, 1958!! Thank you for your service and wonderful words for Rotary. Your continued presence and spirit among us is appreciated and also thank you for leading us in the opening song, "My Country 'tis of Thee".

Due to the inclement weather and cloudy skies, our sights had to be lowered from the heavens over the marsh to the stars on the screen -indoors! Bill Luzader, President of the Society and Director of the Blake Planetarium, inspired us to look at the miracles in the night sky and to be concerned with all the light pollution that keeps us from seeing the full beauty of the heavens. Then he gave us a rain date for stargazing: Saturday, November 1st at the S.S. Council on Aging, in Norwell, after sunset. The telescopes will be set up in the soccer field. We were so sorry that we missed seeing Venus and the fall constellations of Orion, Cassiopeia, Pleiades and Taurus. However Mr. Luzader encourages us to be patient enough to gaze into a dark, new moon sky and see the Milky Way. To do this we must go out very late at night, this fall, before the earth orbits out of its path, and lie on our back to bring The Milky Way into the focus of our naked eyes!

After our meeting Michael, Walter and Dietrich met up with Scituate Chief of Police Brian Stewart and followed up on this opportunity by re-installing him in a brief ceremony as a member of the Scituate Rotary Club. Welcome back Brian! We are looking forward to working with you on programs that will strengthen and support the Scituate community.

Dietrich helped us to also focus on upcoming Rotary programs including:
South Shore Council that meets every 3rd Wed. at Peppercornz in Weymouth
(We look for a representative from our club to go Nov.19 and dates in 2009!!)
A Black Tie Winter Ball on Jan. 23 in Weymouth

Reminder that there is a Board of Directors meeting next week at 5 pm., followed by Club Night.

Hope to see another stellar group then!!!!
