Club Meeting Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

GUESTS: State Representative, Frank Hynes, and Joe Cerra

MEMBERS: President Bob, Dietrich, Janice, Lew, William, Bill C., Suzanne, Connie (Honorary), Bart, Donna, Joan, Sandi, Janet, Ben, Lisa, Diane, and Bernie

Janet gave us a Rotary Foundation Minute to encourage each and every member to become a sustaining member by contributing $100 yearly to the Rotary Foundation for all the work done around the world, including the Polio Eradication program, which has to be matched by Bill Gates Foundation donation of $100 million. Our monthly dinner bills will reflect an $8/mo. voluntary donation toward the $100 per person per year goal. Please note recommended by-law changes at the end of these minutes.

A motion was made, considered and passed to purchase the official Rotary software, Clubrunner. It will take a while to transition, so we will remain patient!

Candace invited us to join her at the SSAC on Thursday, Oct. 9th from 9-noon for a presentation on Irish Immigration. There will also be an evening closing Festival at Wampatuck School on Thursday, Oct. 30 and we would like to have a Rotary presence plus a table for this presentation. Our fundraisers help to support these programs in the schools. What a great link to our local students and future Rotarians!

Treasurer's Report from Diane: $1,703.09 in checking
$107 in Queen of Hearts
$232.36 in Polio Fund
$750 in dues (over $500 out-please remit ASAP)

We thank Bernie for completing a Carolina Hill request for security software installed into their computers. His services were donated on behalf of the club and we just plugged in the fee of the software ($79.99). Again here is a sign of "Service above Self'; what an ubiquitous motto!!!!!

Bill Coulter's WOW's were awesome: " Built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center, a Class 5 Warship, poured into molds on September 9,2003, designed for missions against terrorists, carrying a crew of 360 sailors and 700 marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft, this is THE USS NEW YORK!!!!!! And the ship's motto "Never Forget".

A discussion followed concerning the opportunity to engage more of the business community of Scituate in Rotary. Jim McInnis has asked if he might develop a satellite breakfast or lunch meeting in Scituate. The Board gave its approval to Jim to approach members of the Scituate business and professional community to organize such a club. We will keep Club members posted on the progress and when such meetings might begin. All Rotary members are invited to attend and encourage.

The Board also gave its support to explore sponsorship of a conflict resolution film potentially to be produced by John Michalczyk on the Club's peace initiative in Kenya. At this point, the support is both moral and of a networking nature and not monetary support.

Our speaker was a long-standing friend of Rotary, State Representative Frank Hynes. He is always informative and inspiring. He reflected that one of his favorite projects was the granting of federal funds to restore the coastline to our towns after the devastation of Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and the repair of piers after "No Name" storm in 1991. A long anticipated project was Greenbush Line and we are now grateful for all of his persistence to help "Make this Dream Real". Rep. Hynes was elected for 13 terms and has served the people of Scituate and Marshfield for 26 years, a monumental reflection of "Service above Self", for which we honored him with a full standing ovation!!!! We will never forget what you have done for our community and hope to see you again, soon.

Rotarians and friends are invited next week to hear about Mercy Ships, as presented by Peter and Kathie Connelly.

The following changes to our by-laws are recommended by the Board of Directors following discussions as the August and September Board meetings:

Proposed By-Law Change to be voted on 10/15/08.

The following changes are recommended to Article V Meetings, Section 2 of the By-Laws of the Club.

Strike the first two paragraphs beginning with the words "The regular weekly meetings" and ending with "any credit or reimbursement." These are to be replaced with the following wording:

"The regular meetings of the Club shall be held on Wednesdays every week at 6:30pm.

Members will be billed at the end of each month a dinner fee of $15.00 for each meeting attended during the month, except that each member will be billed for a minimum dinner fee of $15.00 each month regardless of whether they attended one meeting or not.

Additionally, each member will be billed a total of $8.00 per month which is the expected contribution towards a $100.00 per year contribution by each member to the Rotary Foundation. This is a voluntary contribution which the $8.00 prorated charge will be a reminder. Rotary members are encouraged to respond to in a po
sitive manner."
