November 6, 2013: Club Night

The regular weekly meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held on Wednesday, November 6th, at The Scituate Country Club at 6:30 PM.

This was our Club Night, and was preceded by a BOARD MEETING at 5:30 PM.

Members present for the meeting were Dietrich Bilger, Lois Brandes, Lambert Brandes, Jamie Gilmore, Sue Heller, Walter Heller, Michael Johnson, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Bart Nuboer, Joan Powers, Robert Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Lucille Sorrentino, Jack Stebe, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.

President, Jack Stebe, presided.

Joe Kelley led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Robert Schipul offered the Invocation.

All recited The Four Way Test.

The highlight of our evening was a very special presentation masterfully handled by Dietrich Bilger, our own District Governor.  Dietrich bestowed the Award of Major Donor upon our own Bart Nuboer.  Bart Nuboer has received the Paul Harris Award ten times!!!  This award is his eleventh!!!  He received a rare diamond shaped pin only a privileged few may wear!!!  Dietrich explained that in Europe, with this award, Bart has attained the level of Nobility.  Congratulations! Bart.  We are honored to have you in Scituate Rotary and Rotary International is blessed to have Bart Nuboer as a Major Donor.  Thank You, Bart, for all you do.

John Miller read a nice thank you response from Mr. Swett, social studies teacher at SHS and a recent program presenter for SRC.

Bart conducted Queen of Hearts and Happy/Sad Bucks.

Michael Johnson held the winning ticket, but he did not draw the queen.

On Saturday, November 2nd, many SRC volunteers arrived at Sanctuary Church to package meals.  We enjoyed a pizza lunch and had a great time together.

Joe reminded us that on Saturday, November 9th, at 10:00 AM, SRC Members may assist in the task of placing fifty-four thousand American Flags on Veterans’ graves at The National Cemetery in Bourne.  What a privilege for anyone who is able to participate!

Also, a young airman from Rockland was killed in Afghanistan this week. Remember to fly your flags half mast.

The District Foundation Dinner is on Thursday, November 14th.  It is $45.00 per person.  Contact Janet Schmitz to sign up.

Candace is having a Christmas Tree Project Meeting at her house on Saturday morning, November 9th.  Paper tree sales will conclude on December 21st.

We have only two more meetings, November 13th, (Machiavelli) and November 20th, (Dennis Snyder, Medical Missions for Children) before The Cushing Party at The Barker Tavern on December 4th

There will be no meeting on November 27th, as it is the night before Thanksgiving.

Jamie Gilmore presented next year’s Slate of Officers from The Nominating Committee.  It is as follows:

July1, 2014- June 30, 2015
President, John Miller
Vice President, Lucille Sorrentino
Secretary, Lisa Tompson
Treasurer, Bernie Westerveld,
Foundation Chair and Treasurer, Bart and Janet
Board of Directors, Lois Brandes
Board of Directors, Joe Kelley

The election will be the night of The Christmas Party, December 11th, at Janice Brown’s house.

Thank You, Janice, for your extra ordinary hospitality in hosting our Christmas Party each year.  This is the highlight of our Holiday Season.  Is it even possible that it’s only one month away?

Lucille will host an evening of Club Fellowship at her home on December 18th.  To be admitted you must bring an hors d’oeuvre and a bottle of your favorite libation to share.  It might just be the relaxation you need after a busy day of Christmas preparations.  Each member will make a cash donation at the door for a contribution to Shelter Box.  This is in lieu of being billed for a million dollar meal.

Robert Schipul presented a proposal for a concert with Elizabeth Von Trapp to fundraise for the Food Pantry.  It will be held at St. Mary of the Nativity on January 5th, 2014.  Tickets will be $20.00 each.  Elizabeth is accepting a flat fee to cover her expenses for this benefit concert.  The money raised will be dependent on the number of tickets sold.

We have a date, Sunday, January 26th, 2014, for the Senior Dinner at Saint Luke’s, Scituate.

On Saturday, February 15th, 2014, SRC will host a luncheon at The Marshfield Council On Aging.  We need to plan for at least 100 diners.

The first Scituate Rotary Club Meeting of the new year will be held on January 8th at The Scituate Country Club.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
