SPASIBA ZA GASTYEPRIMSTVA!!!! (Russian translation: thank you for your hospitality!!!!)

It was an OPEN WORLD night at Rotary!! We welcomed our Russian delegation of doctors and Rotarians from Siberia. Many thanks are given to Janet and Bart for spearheading this wonderful program which is congressionally sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by Rotary District 7950. Janice, Candace and Lisa were also instrumental in housing these delegates and assisting with a week of programs and meals. Spasiba to you!

Our delegates are selected as young Russian leaders who will network here in Boston for a week of immersion in cancer health care, oncology facilities, and environmental awareness. Janet and Bart also introduced them to Plymouth Plantation, the Mayflower and the Blue Men as well as a roast beef and lobster feast.

In return, these young Russian professionals visited and shared information about their culture, history and local projects at four local Rotary Clubs, including ours, tonight.

Dr. Olga Gertsog was the presenter, aptly aided by translator, Valery Yegorov. She gave us background of her hometown, Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, its capital city. It was founded in 1620, the same year that the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts. She also said that the high temperature today was 40 degrees below zero!!!! I'm sure that they were glad to be visiting Boston- still in the 50's!!!!

Dr. Gertsog is involved at the Sosnovoborsk Orphanage and is focused especially on the care of children and those living in high risk conditions at home. Her facility provides a calming environment with soft lighting, transporting artwork, music, aroma therapy, comfort and care for healing in addition to their cancer treatment. Their local Russian Rotary Club is currently raising matching funds for hospital oncology department. Their goal is to purchase eight infusion pumps. We admire their Rotary work.

Also fitting was the induction of our newest member, Dr. Veronica Vedensky, who is also Russian and is on staff at SouthShoreMedicalCenter. She was a great asset to help as a liaison to the Russian Delegation and we are delighted to greet her officially as a fellow Scituate Rotarian. Janet is her sponsor.

We hope to see you all next week for a wonderful presentation of our Rotary Foundation by none other than our own Janet Schmitz.

Respectfully submitted,
