William told us about his trip to Boissy-Sucy en Brie, south of Paris. He came back with the rotary flag from their Rotary. He met young people and their parents as well as principal and teachers. They are very interested in having exchanged students in high school.

Jeannie left some material but had to leave because her uncle died and she needed to be with family.

Phone Book: Bart gave out a few more slips for people to call about their contracts that haven't been renewed yet. They are to call business that have not renewed their contracts for the phone book. Ask if they received the contract and encourage them to renew their contracts. We need new ads too. Jeannie has copies of last year phone books if you need them.

Secretary: Joan read Thank you letters from Betty Crowley of the Scituate Food Pantry, Florence Choate director of the Scituate Senior Center, Dick Eckhouse of the Maritime Center, and Shawn Costa , executive director of Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield.

Janet, Bart and Joan help at the St. Patrick's senior luncheon on Tuesday, March 15th. The donation we gave the senior center paid for the luncheon and entertainment. We also gave each senior a scratch ticket. We had a full house and all had a good time.

Program: Mimi Svenning "SunAWARE Class Demo"

Scituate Rotary Club member, Mimi Svenning, the assistant director of the Children's Melanoma Prevention Foundation, presented an overview of the SunAWARE skin cancer prevention program used by CMPF in South Shore classrooms. The South Shore ranks among the highest in the state for incidences of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Massachusetts ranks among the top 10 nationally for melanoma. Melanoma, formerly a disease of older men, is now hitting young people to the point where it is the number one form of cancer in young white woman between 25 and 29.
Mimi took Rotarians through a model lesson featuring a variety of visuals and sun protection materials. Scituate Rotary awarded the Foundation a grant of $1,250 in October, 2010 to fund their work in Scituate Public Schools. This grant led to the revision of the SunAWARE curriculum to be grade-level specific and aligned with Massachusetts state frameworks. It was successfully piloted in Scituate this winter. It now resides on the Foundation's website as a free resource nationally and internationally.
To date the Foundation has taught over 100,000 children and teachers about being safe from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, considered by the World Health Organization a proven carcinogen. Changes in lifestyles, such as more time and money for recreation, and trends such as indoor tanning have contributed to the rise in skin cancer incidences to epidemic levels. It is estimated that one person in five will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, claims one

person every hour in the United States.
Mimi thanked Scituate Rotary for its generous support and role in spreading the word about skin cancer prevention and early detection, especially to children
