March 14th, 2012: John Miller - Alzheimer's, a disease without boundaries

Members present at the weekly meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club were Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Jeannie Durkee, Walter Heller, Michael Johnson, Suzanne Kavanagh, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Bart Nuboer, Janet Schmitz, Jack Stebe, Ben Summers, Howard Tufts, and Bernie Westerveld.
Our esteemed guests were Karen Kelley and Connie Mitchell.

The regular meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held at The Scituate Country Club, and was convened at 6:30 with President Elect, Joe Kelley, presiding.

Joe Kelley led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Ben Summers offered the Invocation.

Lois Brandes led the recitation of The Four Way Test.

Joe Kelley reported that he had attended the PETS Workshop.

Bernie reported that he is attending The Leadership Institute on March 24th.

Sergeant of Arms, Walter Heller, conducted Happy Sad Bucks.

Janet Schmitz gave a Foundation Minute. She reported that there are now six areas of Global Funding. All grants must fall under one of the approved six categories.  This will simplify the process for writing and approving Rotary projects.

Jack Stebe reported that the Marshfield Cross Booklet is progressing nicely.  Welcome back, Jack.  We missed you.

Maureen and her chefs served a delicious New England Boiled Dinner to help us celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, which is this Saturday.

Joe Kelley asked our club to provide a matching grant for The Scituate American Legion and sponsor four Scituate High School Students to attend a Civics and Government workshop held at Stonehill College.  The cost is $275 dollars per student.  A quorum of the board members had meet briefly before the meeting and voted in the affirmative, conditional upon a membership vote in the regular meeting.  Joe called for a vote by the members present.  The membership vote was unanimous with no "nays".

Our own John Miller was our program speaker for the evening.  His topic was Alzheimer's-- A Disease Without Boundaries.  John is the owner of Home Care Partners, LLC.  John gave a timely and sensitive overview of the signs of this affliction and the steps that need to be taken by loved ones and and care givers as this disease progresses.  Thank you John for all you are doing to help and support those who find themselves in this position, regardless of their role in this affliction.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
