ROTARY NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 18, 2009

President Bob called our last meeting in February to order amid swirling snowflakes and a veritable winter wonderland. Connie, who braved the weather, led us in a warm pledge of allegiance. Ben invoked a Rotary blessing for the faithful work of our club in its 40th year of service.

Our stalwart attendees were: Dietrich, Lew, William (at South Shore Council), Eric, Jamie, Walter, Joe, Karen, Connie, Bart, Bob P. Joan, Paul, Bob S., Sandi, Janet, Ben and Bernie.

It was great to have Eric Foote with us and know that his back is healing with the aid of physical therapy. Eric is coordinating the Senior Luncheon at St. Luke's Church on Saturday, March 14 with a St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage menu. He is asking for volunteers to sign up for 10:30 set up, cooks and servers and clean-up committee. Thank you Eric and Joan for your planning efforts.

Our Happy and Sad Bucks revealed that Janice Brown, like Punxsutawney Phil, has six weeks of hibernation to heal from restorative foot surgery! We will be missing her until then. Happy Bucks celebrated our GatesSchool students winning 4th place in the Future City Competition in Washington, DC. We were very happy to be able to sponsor such an awesome group of 7th and 8th graders.

Fellow club member, Joan Powers, took the podium to share with us the work she is involved with at the ScituateSeniorCenter. Our limited town facility is in the process of negotiating a 1.9 million dollar loan from the state for a new community center. In the meantime, generous donations have given the interior a new facelift of furniture in the meeting room. Also a new transportation van was purchased for $50,000. Joan thanked our club for its support that helped to make these improvements possible. With over 3,000 outings made for medical appointments and necessary errands, this is a much appreciated gift. Bart can verify this as a volunteer driver and Joan invited any one interested to volunteer to be a driver also!

Joan is looking forward to the club's support of the Senior Luncheon on March 14 and we ask for all members to email Eric Foote at ef2028@comcast.net  to sign up as cooks, servers and KP staff.
