August 21st, 2013: Marie McCune - Public Service Experiences This Year

The regular meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held on Wednesday, August 21st, 2013, at the Scituate Country Club. This was a unique SRC Meeting, as it was recorded by Shannon Hendrickson to be shown at a later time on Scituate Cable.

Those present were Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Jamie Gilmore, Shannon Hendrickson, Michael Johnson, Joe Kelley, John McCune, Marie McCune, John Miller, Bart Nuboer, Joan Powers, Pete Rhoten, Robert Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Jack Stebe, Dianne Wells, Ethel Wheatley, and Bernie Westerveld.

President, Jack Stebe, convened the meeting at 6:30 PM, after a SRC Board Meeting, and welcomed our guests of the evening, Shannon Hendrickson, Marie McCune, her father, John McCune, Dianne Wells, and Ethel Wheatley.

Pete Rhoten led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Robert Schipul offered the Invocation.

Janet Schmitz led The Four Way Test

Jack presented Joe Kelley with The Past President’s Pin as a token of our appreciation for Joe’s dedicated service to Scituate Rotary Club this past year.  Thank You, Joe, as you continue to mentor our club.

Janet Schmitz gave a detailed report on the Heritage Days’ Pancake Breakfast that functioned both as community service and a fundraiser.  Thank you, Janet, for your dedicated service to Scituate Rotary.

Jack called attention to the committee assignments he had emailed to club members and asked everyone to take special note of her/his committee.  It has been suggested that one meeting a month be reserved as a time to get together with our committees.  This would negate the necessity of using additional timeslots for committee work.

We were delighted to learn that our own, Joan Powers, is included in a new book, Legendary Locals of Scituate.  Congratulations, Joan!  We are admiring of all the work you do in so many venues to help others.

Joan wrote two articles we viewed last week in The Scituate Mariner.  One was about The Michael Kelley School in Afghanistan and the other was about the Pancake Breakfast.  Both included pictures and were thorough accounts of both events.  Thank you, Joan, for your great service to Scituate Rotary.

We are grateful to Nancy White and her crew at The Mariner for all the great coverage they are giving Scituate Rotary.

Bart Nuboer conducted Happy Sad Bucks and The Search for the Queen.  Lois held the winning ticket again, and do you believe, she drew the King, again?  Try to remember, Lois, it’s the King’s wife you’re trying to find!

The Membership accepted with a Yes Vote the proposed budget for 2013-2014 that was agreed upon by the Board.

Bernie clarified the difference between the SRC Account and The Foundation Account and the use of the monies in the two completely separate funds.

Marie McCune was our program speaker of the evening.  Marie has just graduated from SHS and is on her way to U Mass Amherst for the Fall Semester.  She is planning to be a Political Science Major with a minor in Public Policy.  Marie is one of our Scholarship recipients and Jack was pleased to present the scholarship to her.

Last year we were delighted with Marie when she came and reported on her experience at Girl’s Nation.  SRC had supported her trip to Washington, DC, where she was elated to have met The President of The United States.  Once again, we were not disappointed.  Marie, as a leader in student government at Scituate High School, charmingly engaged us as she told about her initiatives to benefit special needs students.  We were moved by her determination to make a difference in their lives.  Life Skills’ Class for challenged students, Prom Angels, and making everyone feel a part were highlights of Marie’s Community Service this year.

Marie, you have a wonderful future ahead of you.   We are very proud of you and wish you every happiness and success as you begin this exciting, new part of your journey.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
