April 4th, 2012: Club Night
Members present at the weekly meeting of Scituate Rotary were Dietrich Bilger, Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Jeannie Durkee, James Gilmore, Walter Heller, Michael Johnson, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Joan Powers, Janet Schmitz, Lucille Sorrentino, Jack Stebe, Ben Summers, Lisa Tompson, Howard Tufts, and Bernie Westerveld.
Esteemed guests were Karen Kelley and Beverly Westerveld.

The weekly meeting of Scituate Rotary convened at 6:30 at The Scituate Country Club with President, Jamie Gilmore presiding.

Joe Kelley led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Ben Summers offered the Invocation.

Janet Schmitz led the recitation of The Four Way Test.

Sergeant of Arms, Walter Heller collected Happy, Sad Bucks.

A delicious fish dinner was presented by Maureen and her chefs.

Joe Kelley is meeting on April 13th with The Leominster Rotary Club. They are helping to support the school in Afghanistan that was built by The Massachusetts Army Guard and named after Karen and Joe's son, Michael.  Our Scituate Club is considering options for co involvement with our sister club in Leominster.  Bart Nuboer has suggested a backpack program similar to the one that Janet's and his daughter, Heather, received special honors for developing to aid displaced children.  Janet and Bart have a video they will share with our club that will explain the program.  It sounds wonderful!  We eagerly await!

Several observations concerning the Phone Book were brought to the fore. The Phone Book is definitely a go, as it is a profitable enterprise; however, ways to keep current, such as an e file, (as well as paper), and evaluating practices of production, etc., are under discussion.

Jack Stebe spoke for the membership committee and for the work being done in Marshfield.  He challenged us to brings guests to our weekly meetings.

There will be an Earth Day Observation in Scituate at Driftway Park on Sunday, April 22, from 2-5 p.m.  Scituate Rotary has been invited to have a table at this event.  We decided to make this our Service Above Self Day. Jamie will pay for brochures to hand out, and volunteers will staff the table to answer questions and present membership guidelines.  There will be a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Windmill at this event.

Congratulations to Dietrich Bilger for doing so admirably in the walk for peace.  Please remember to pass in your pledge monies to support this worthy cause.

Scholarship monies will not be given to students until their first semester grades come in.  Scholarship Night is being planned for June 13.   Lisa Tompson is chairperson for reading the applications.

President Jamie asked members to think about Scituate Rotarys' involvement in Scituate Heritage Days.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Lois Brandes
