21 September 2016 - Linda Hayes, Director of the Scituate Council on Aging

President Sue Heller gave an update from our September 14 event, the showing of Razia Jan’s movie “What Tomorrow Brings,” at the Mill Wharf Cinema, including the sponsor reception meeting held at the Mill Wharf Restaurant prior to the movie.  The final number of sponsorships of one of the girls attending Razia’s school was 16.  Additional monies were collected at the theatre, for a total of $5,371.

Janice noted that Razia’s movie will be shown on PBS/WGBH on October 31.

Sue called attention to the fact that October 24 is World Polio Day, as noted in the recent Rotarian magazine, which contains a great article which all members should read.  Janet suggested a copy of the article should be copied and given to the Rotary Interact group at Scituate High School.

The speaker for our meeting was Linda Hayes, Director of the Scituate Council on Aging (“COA”).  Linda shared information on her background of working at the Duxbury Council on Aging before coming to Scituate.  She presented an overview of the programs at the COA.  A question was brought up about the future location of the COA, and there was discussion about the constraints of Scituate’s current very small Senior Center located on Brook Street.  Linda asked if the size of the COA building/space matters, to which the club members answered “yes!”  Linda feels strongly that the COA needs to continually evolve in order to meet the increasing needs of the ever-expanding aging population in Scituate.  Linda mentioned that their very popular ten-week program “Aging Mastery” was starting the next day, September 22.

Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, September 28, 6:30pm at the Scituate Country Club.
