12 February 2014: Dr. Mike Hughes - Health Express
Rotary Club of Scituate

Meeting Minutes: February 12, 2014 held at Scituate Country Club

In attendance: Jack, J.D., Ben, Janet & Bart, Lucille, Mike, Walter & Sue, Joan, Janice, Joe, Sandy, Dietrich and Lisa plus our guests Dr. Mike Hughes and his colleague from Health Express Walk-in Urgent Medical Care.

President Jack Stebe opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. and showed us the SCTV public service announcement about our Scituate Rotary Club starring Nikki, which is outstanding (J.D. send us a link to this via e-mail; it is well worth viewing).

Ben gave a Rotary minute and held the winning ticket, but sadly not the Queen!

Maureen served us a delicious dinner of chicken with sauce and rice.

REMINDER: The next community dinner is Saturday, February 22 at the Marshfield COA; all hands on deck about 10:30 a.m. A few folks will set up on Friday at 3:00 p.m. Joe is planning to serve spiral ham and au gratin potatoes.

Janice & Lisa volunteered to attend the upcoming grants meeting in Braintree on April 2, which is necessary in order for our club to participate in the Rotary district grant program.

Our current grants are Razia Jan and the Michael J. Kelley School in Afghanistan and our Community Dinner program.

Our district Winter Ball will be held on Saturday, March 1 at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield and our club has booked a table. It includes a Special Auction to an African Photo Safari to benefit The Rotary Foundation; bidding starts at $800.

By the way, folks who attended Lucille’s wonderful Christmas drinks party should make out a check in any amount desired to the Scituate Rotary Foundation/Shelter Box to help buy another Shelter Box from our club; please give your check to Janet.

Amazing Lucille is organizing another wonderful evening with Tony Deblois, which will take place on Friday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Scituate Country Club. Reserve tickets ASAP, as this was a sell-out event last time.

Next week on February 19 will be the rescheduled meeting to award checks to our local organizations with Christmas Giving Tree money. Please try to attend. The following two meetings will not be at SCC, as it is closing for two weeks. The meeting on February 6 will be at the Mill Wharf with Nick Lappin, while the March 5 meeting will be a "Million Dollar Meal" held at the Christ Lutheran Church on Route 3A in Scituate.

After Happy/Sad Bucks, Jack introduced our guest:

Dr. Mike Hughes from Health Express, a walk-in urgent care facility that has two locations, one in Weymouth and the other in Pembroke. At first, Dr. Hughes discussed health insurance (both private and public) and how it drives the cost of medical care. Dr. Hughes had been an emergency room specialist, but decided to open his urgent care business in Massachusetts, which reduces the cost of emergency room care from approximately $1,000 at the hospital to about $250 at urgent care. Using urgent care instead of the hospital emergency room saves time and money – most patients are in and out in under a half hour. Also, the doctors at urgent care are able to become more involved with their patients and always follow up with a phone call within 48 hours. Health Express requires no appointment, no referral and has low co-pays, while treating everything from fevers to fractures. The doctors are board certified ER Physicians. Visit their website on www.healthexpressma.com for more information.

Jack adjourned the meeting at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
