The Rotary Minute
Back in the day, before Facebook and Air Fryers, the auction was held at the local cable studio on the top floor of the Bronson building. It was Analog with a capital "A". It was televised live and on local radio. Rotarians would take shifts manning a bank of phones, filling out bid cards and handing them to a runner. The runner, usually sitting on the floor out of the view of the camera but under the hot studio lights, would hand the card to members at the Active bid board. Nearby, the Auction hosts would talk about the items, update the listeners on the radio and cue the volunteers on the first floor to move an auction item in front a camera to show the actual item being auctioned off. This meant all physical items needed to on location then moved to the redemption center at the end of the night. It was exciting and a "all hands on deck event" With help of Rick Conti,Mike Andrade, Jim Jones and Gerry Hickman, our auction has evolved, requiring less manpower and providing other ways to raise money for the community.
Still, I miss the miserable expressions on the runner's faces as they frantically passed cards from phone operators to the Bid Board under the smoking hot studio lights. Good Times.......
