TODAY'S SPEAKER (Weds 9/6/23): Amanda Blount, Executive Director of The Attleboro Literacy Center
Founded in 1988 by a small group of dedicated volunteers, under the leadership of the late Donna Morse, The Literacy Center (TLC) enhances lives and promotes self-sufficiency through quality adult education services. Our vision is a thriving community where all members, regardless of socioeconomic status, are empowered to achieve their full potential.
The Literacy Center provides classes, counseling, and support to disadvantaged adults to help them reach self-sufficiency. For some, this involves learning English. Others are pursuing their GED. TLC also provides career counseling, computer training, one-on-one tutoring, and assists people who are preparing to take the U.S. Citizenship exam. Last year they had 604 students last year from 57 countries.
The Literacy Center helps people learn English, get better jobs, and become more engaged members of our community. We are the only organization in the greater Attleboro area that does this work. In addition, The Literacy Center leverages nearly 10,000 volunteer hours each year, with more than 120 trained volunteers providing 1-on-1 tutoring to hundreds of students on a myriad of subjects. All services are provided at either low or no cost to our students, and no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay for classes. The Literacy Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and is supported entirely by donations and grants.
Amanda highlighted the illegal migrant crisis going on in the United States and their status as "asylum seekers". The esteemed Governor of MA, Maura Healey, has conveniently declared a State of Emergency which will allow the state to take over 'for profit" establishments in order to house these migrants. Right now a majority are in area hotels/motels which the State is paying for along with giving them a daily food stipend - all tax payer funded. Amanda is looking for funding in order to teach these individuals English - you can give either through TLC website or contact Amanda directly.
