Braving frigid waters in the early morning hours, these dedicated volunteers raised funds to support vital community programs including food pantries, dictionary distributions for students, and emergency shelter services. Their ShelterBox banner held high, the shivering but smiling group embodied the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."

Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters will honor the 2024 Citizens of the Year

The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters will celebrate neighbors in our communities who have contributed as volunteers to help others in the towns of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and West Bridgewater. The Citizen of the Year Celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 8th at 7 PM at the Sachem Rock Community Center in East Bridgewater. Tickets are $ 20 and can be purchased at the door. We hope that you will be able to attend our celebration that recognizes these wonderful volunteers who make our communities a better place to live and work.

The awardees for 2024 are:

For the town of Bridgewater, the Rotary named Pat Neary. Pat is best known for protecting the environment, health and well-being of the town. As an environmental warrior she has gathered relevant and accurate information to identify key issues, always with her passion and persistence in educating the community. Pat understands that simply knowing and talking about an issue is not enough. One must also meet with leaders, inform the public, and change laws and procedures to reach sustainable goals. Through careful research, Pat identified plastic waste as a major cause of environmental pollution and degradation in Bridgewater. She carried out an effective educational program and successful campaign focused on eliminating single use plastic bags.

For the town of East Bridgewater, the Rotary named Dale Julius. Dale is an outstanding citizen with enormous local pride and has made many contributions through his volunteer work. Besides his chair of the Historical Commission, President of the Kiwanis Club and head of the East Bridgewater Civil War Round Table, Dale was instrumental in his role as co-chair of the highly successful Bicentennial Celebration in town. Along with co-chair Dave Sheedy, a past recipient of the Citizen of the Year, Dale and other residents worked tirelessly to create a yearlong celebration. Partnering with businesses, organizations, and fellow citizens, Dale was instrumental in developing a memorable town anniversary.

For the town of West Bridgewater, the Rotary named Jenny Williams. Jenny has contributed her time and volunteer efforts in a number of areas. She has co-chaired the Board of Deacons for the First Church and is the Collector for the Church. Jenny is the Treasurer of the West Bridgewater Public Library, which flowed from her love of books. She has been an active participant in the West Bridgewater River Walk helping to raise funds from local businesses and serving food to townspeople at the event. Jenny is also a member of the Just Older Youth (J.O.Y.)  as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program delivering meals to local residents.

The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters Recognizes  2021 Citizens of the Year
From the Desk of the President of the Rotary of the Bridgewaters

The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters held its 21st Citizen of the Year celebration at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club on Thursday, November 4th. At the event the Rotary honored Reverend Dr. Carol Ashton of West Bridgewater, Dr. Ben Carson of Bridgewater and Theresa McNulty of East Bridgewater for their volunteer efforts in their communities and their commitment to help those in need. Carol Ashton was recognized for her work with the West Bridgewater Food Pantry, her launching of the After School Café for West Bridgewater students, and her hosting of R.E.A.C.H – Resident Emergency Assistance Care Help. Dr. Ben Carson, an English Professor at Bridgewater State University, was honored for his work with young people in Cambodia, especially those with HIV. He also continues to be involved as a co-founder of the Read to Me program at the Old Colony Correctional Complex and the African Heritage Coalition and Alternative to Violence initiative. Theresa McNulty was awarded the Citizen of the Year from East Bridgewater for starting the H.U.G.S.- Help US Give Support – which provides Christmas gifts to over one hundred East Bridgewater families. Theresa is also a member of the Recreation Commission and the current president of the Council of Aging where she helps fundraise and develops programs for Seniors. The Citizen of the Year event welcomed an overflow crowd and through the money raised from ticket sales and our event booklet our Club will be able to continue a range of programs from college financial assistance to community-minded high school seniors, support for local food pantries and libraries, the dictionary distribution program to 3rd and 4th graders, and our international programs to combat polio, provide emergency assistance to those affected by catastrophic disasters, and advance the cause of safe water, clear sanitation and expanded health care, peaceful resolution of disputes and social justice around the world. It is the ongoing commitment of the Rotary of the Bridgewaters to further our mission of “service above self.”

Posted by Ismael Kahiu
New Year's Day 2026 began with a splash as members of the Rotary Club of Bridgewater, joined by the Rotary Club of Brockton, took their 8th annual polar plunge.
