This joint project with the South Tucson Cyber Lions Club to provide shoes to 25 students from Elvira Elementary School took place on Tuesday, February 19. 25 students arrived at the Payless Shoe Source at the Spectrum Mall to select a pair of shoes. They were led by Tucson Kino Rotary member, Andy Townsend, who is the Principal of Elvira and several faculty members.
They were met by Richard Stevenson the President of the South Tucson Cyber Lions club and six of their members. Tucson Kino Rotary was represented by President John Palacio, Chris Bejarano, Joan Fawcett, David Fawcett and Buck Crouch (a member of both organizations).
On a very positive note, each child received not one, but two pairs of shoes and a package of socks. This good fortune for the students was caused by the "Going out of Business" sale happening at the store. We expressed our sympathy to the Payless staff.
Each child had their feet measured by Payless staff, then accompanied by a Lion or Rotary volunteer to the appropriate size area. Delighted oohs and aahs were heard throughout the building. One by one each child chose their favorites and tried them on.
A very satisfying morning for all.
