The Rotary Club of Yarmouth needs your help and support! During the month of April, the club is collecting mobility devices which will be sent to disabled adults and children in developing countries in Africa. Many are the victims of the polio disease and have been left disabled. They are often unable to be an active part of their communities because of their lack of mobility. These devices will help people be able to reach their village to collect water, go to school, accept jobs, and be active participants in their communities.

If you have any crutches, canes, walkers, leg and knee braces, wheelchairs or other mobility devices lying around your home, please donate to Help Change a Life. Drop-off locations are listed below, thanks to our wonderful volunteers.

Yarmouth Rotary Making a Difference: New President, Officers, and Board of Directors

Posted by John Cooke on Jul 10, 2017
New Club President, Matthew Fitzsimmons, Introduces Club’s Focus for 2017-18

July marks the fiscal year for every Rotary Club, and the Rotary Club of Yarmouth is no exception. On June 21 at Cummaquid Golf Club in Barnstable, the Rotary Club of Yarmouth installed its new Board of Directors, Officers, and new President, Matthew Fitzsimmons. As part of the installation ceremony, Past President Patricia Armstrong installed incoming President Fitzsimmons and Assistant District Governor Stephen Albright swore in the remaining officers and board members. Past President Dick Corsini, who is a founding member and also the club’s first president, was the master of ceremonies during the evening.

Several awards were presented to Rotarians by outgoing president Melissa Farrell. The Rotarian of the Year award was presented to Bill Lemoine for his hard work and dedication to several of the club’s main events. Lemoine has chaired the scholarship committee for many years, which recently awarded over $17,000 to students attending Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and Cape Cod Tech. Service Above Self (Presidential Citations) were awarded to Kevin Lennon, Gerald “Curly” Carey, and Past President Tammy Glivinski-Saben for their commitment and contributions throughout the past Rotary year.
During his first address to the club, President Fitzsimmons announced that the Rotary Club of Yarmouth was awarded a District Grant to fund the purchase of GPS wristbands. These wristbands will assist the Yarmouth Police Department and families with loved ones suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s to locate the individual should they wander from home. These devices will be available to the public in the coming months thanks to the District Grant and matching donation from the club.

The 2017-18 Rotary International theme, “Making a Difference”, was introduced and Fitzsimmons commented, “We make a difference every year for the graduates of our schools through our annual golf tournament, and for youth of families in tough financial situations through our auction and Children’s Christmas Party. We volunteer at Champ House, some of us run races, and some deliver food for meals on wheels or volunteer at the Food Pantry or at a town clean up. Some of us may do different things, but all of us DO GOOD, and doing well for our community, both locally and globally, is making a difference.”

Fitzsimmons also announced that with the help of Ann Knell, the Principal at Mattacheese Middle School, the Rotary Club of Yarmouth will introduce the first EarlyAct program for middle schoolers this coming fall. This will allow children attending the school to be able to begin volunteering through Rotary at the middle school level and carry on their volunteerism through the Interact club at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. By offering the EarlyAct club at Mattacheese, the club will be the first in the district, which covers southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, to have such a program.

Outgoing Secretary Jim Saben presented the Perfect Attendance awards to those members who have not missed a club meeting, or have gone to other clubs to make up missed meetings. Of note there were 11 members that received the Perfect Attendance award, including John Herr who marked 48 years of perfect attendance, Jim Walker with 28 years, Rick Cannon with 27 years, Sally Bowles with 25 years, and Phil Morris with 20 years.

  • President Elect – Kevin Lennon
  • Vice President – Gerald “Curly” Carey
  • Secretary – Rafi Chaprut

Rising Star

Rising Star: Jessica Holbrook, D-Y Regional High School

Josh Clarkin, of the D-Y Guidance Department, called upon the enthusiasms of his professional experience to illuminate the plethora of reasons why Jessica Holbrook is a Rising Star. Starting with the profile of her academic prowess (GPA of 3.69 and 12th in her class of 179), Josh outlined examples of Jessica’smeeting challenges, high intellect, and work ethic.” An observer would note that she has to be an outstanding time manager: holding down two jobs, has a black belt in Tai Kwando, is president of the National Honor Society, Student Ambassador, secretary of her Class of 2017, president of the Art Club, member of the National Art Society, and winner of the Regis College Book Award.

She not only is a student who does these things well, but Jesse does them with “passion and purpose,” pushing herself to grow in all aspects of life. While holding herself to high expectations, she exhibits an empathetic approach to everyone else. Her career plans for becoming a Nurse are well on their way with a full scholarship to UMass Boston’s Nursing Program. Jessica, in response to her introduction, said there was “nothing left to say.” She then proceeded to laud credit to Mom, other parents, D-Y’s opportunities, clubs and volunteers, the Class of 2007, teachers, the School to Careers Program, and interning at the Cape Cod Hospital. “It will be quite difficult to leave.”

The Rotary Club of Yarmouth is spearheading a collection of Mobility Devices (MD’s) on Cape Cod to send to needy adults and children in Africa. With these MDs, the disabled will be able to have a better quality of life; mobility will allow them to collect water, go to school, accept a job and be part of an active community. These devices will help those most vulnerable to have a better quality of life.

Rotary Work Day April 27, 2013

Posted by Stephen Albright on Apr 27, 2013
15 Yarmouth Rotaians and 1 Aussie Exchange Student swarmed onto Packet Landing Veteran Park on Saturday morning to perform a clean-up project in conjunction with Rotary Work Day. Volunteers pulled weeds and raked out all of the planting beds in the park, greatly improving the appearance of it for all of the veterans and visitors to the park to enjoy. A great job by all who volunteered. Plans are being made to continue this great work in the park, the beautiful gateway to our town.

The Maktha Campus School Inauguration (a direct interactive transmission from Hyderabad, India)

Posted by Michael Riley on Jan 26, 2012

As a culmination of a year-long mutual effort and partnership among Rotary Clubs, the Navionics Foundation, local India educational leaders, numerous dedicated individuals, and committed financial assistance, the day arrived in the city of Hyderabad, India, to celebrate the renovation of the Maktha School and the completion of Phase 1 construction.

With the assistance of a computer-based Skype hookup, both the Rotary Clubs of Yarmouth, MA, and of Greater Hyderabad, India, could simultaneously participate in a single Rotary meeting (although it was late afternoon at that location in India). President Mike and his counterpart in Hyderabad were able to conduct an equally novel and normal Rotary meeting schedule. It should be noted that the remarkable arrangement of computers, projectors, screens, and software that made it all possible were put together by the dexterity and talent of Wayne Hohler, with an able assist from Mike Riley.

In a morning filled with drama and significant features, some segments can be highlighted: the presence and narration of the Club’s official onsite representative, Tammy Glivinski (who was accompanied by her daughter, Elizabeth); the dedication and management of Jackie Carnevali, her husband Giuseppe, and their Navionics Foundation; the partnership with the Rotary Club of Greater Hyderabad; the contributions from the Bourne-Sandwich Rotary (via Rick Boucher), the D-Y Interact Club’s Cultural Awareness Kit (as well as other ongoing activities), plus a donation of $841 presented by Interact President Peter Julian and three officers; the work of the Club’s World Community Service Committee (particularly, Bob Wells and Dave Bisbee); the photographs from the Inauguration Day activities and Puja ceremony; and a hefty and impressive commitment from the members of the Yarmouth Rotary, who, all the while, maintained an inspiring level of local projects such as the Yarmouth Food Pantry.

Do you have an unused band or orchestral instrument in your attic, basement or in the back of a closet?  The Rotary Club of Yarmouth in conjunction the DY Band Parents Association is collecting those unused instruments and refurbishing them for use in the elementary school band.  Even better, you can get a tax deduction for the donation of that instrument.

Yarmouth Rotary Book Club

Real book readers are always looking for the next “best” book. Yarmouth Rotary Club seems like fertile ground for suggestions. A new column will soon occupy the pages of the ETGIFIY.  Take a moment and email me your favorite books, either old or new. It would be nice to have just a line or two about the book – what made it one of your favorites? If you see a book in the column and wish to comment on it, please do. We also need a name for the column so send suggestions! I thought of "Reader's Writes" but I'm sure someone can come up with something better. I'm going to start with a few of my suggestions. Please add to it :)

Fragile Beasts - Tawni O'Dell - wise, gentle book

The Story of Edgar Sawtell - David Wroblewski - different and   good read

The Art of Racing in the Rain - Garth Stein - engaging - life's tough lessons

The festival invites young artists from across the Cape to come together to create one of a kind masterpieces in chalk on pavement, or with acrylic paint on junk cars. There is also a mural project led by local artists who work with young artists to create their own masterpiece on a large white van.  Admission is free to participate and admire the works in progress.  Art supplies are provided to all participants.  All projects are available for sponsorship. There will be food and music to create a festival atmosphere.

This year the popular junk car painting will include middle school students with an adult leader to create their masterpiece alongside high school students.  The number of cars is limited so register your group early.

Sponsorships opportunities include $50 for a part of the multi-sponsored van mural project, $100 for a pavement chalk project and $250 for a junk car painting project.  You can bring your own artist or one will be supplied.   See Bianca or Marianne for additional information or go to www.yarmouthstreetartfestival.com for sponsor and artist registration forms.

Profits from the festival will provide funding for art & literacy projects of the Yarmouth Rotary Club including the 5th grade geographic literacy project, and other community “Good Works” projects. This project will provide ongoing funding to a program of maintaining and acquiring band and orchestral instruments for students in the Yarmouth Elementary Schools music education program.

2014 Rotary Golf Tournament

Posted by John Cooke

Dear Friends,

The Rotary Club of Yarmouth has been working hard to make our community a better place to live. Each Fall for the past 25 years we have hosted this golf tournament to raise funds that are used throughout the year to assist programs on Cape Cod. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been redirected back into the mid-Cape area and every penny has been used to serve our fellow citizens.

Here are a few examples:

  • Over $20,000 raised for scholarships in 2013
  • Donations to the Yarmouth Food Pantry
  • Annual Christmas party for deserving children
  • Weekly support of the Meals on Wheels program
  • Through our Good Works committee, a variety of local requests are funded.

The Rotary motto of Service Above Self is foremost in all our efforts.

The funds that we raise at this tournament truly have a significant impact on local families and organizations in need…..and you make it happen!

This year’s tournament will be held at The Ridge Club with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m.

As always, there will be excellent food, good friends, great prizes and a lot of laughs.

Yours in service to the community,
Stephen Albright, President

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Posted by Stephen Albright

At our regular meeting on Friday August 9th our club presented Yarmouth Fire Department Captain Jon Sawyer with 20 smoke detectors, 10 carbon monoxide detectors and 100 9volt batteries which will be given to needy Yarmouth residents. After an earlier presentation to our club about fire safety it was noted that when the fire department enters houses during calls and inspections, it finds many situations where there are non- working detectors or none at all. Sometimes all that is needed is a battery. Members of our club felt that something needed to be done before a serious accident happened resulting in a serious injury or fatality. Our good works committee voted on spending funds to procure the detectors. Interstate batteries, located on Station Ave., So. Yarmouth donated the batteries. A big thank you to Interstate Batteries. On behalf of our entire Club I want to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all involved in these events.  We all admire the hard work and planning that went into making these events a resounding success.  Once again you have shown our Club's dedication to "Service Above Self" and our commitment  to Building Communities.

The "profits" from these events go far beyond any monetary success.  As we watched the happy, engaged  children and families spend time together enjoying the activities it gave everyone a reward that cannot be valued.

Engineers Without Borders

Posted by Tom Tomasik

Last week's TGIFIY included a preview introduction of Julie Bliss a junior at WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) and a very active member of the WPI chapter of Engineers Without Borders. This week Mickey Walker introduced Julie, along with three other WPI members of this impressive group: Chris Garceau, Emily Dudley, and Pat Sheppard.

The overall organization, Engineers Without Borders-USA, "supportscommunity-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects while fostering responsible leadership." (For more about EWB-USA, check their website: www.ewb-usa.org.)

The students' presentation centered on their project in the Guatemala village of Guachthu'uq, where they made an assessment, data gathering, and "listening" trip in the summer of 2010. Of the many problems facing the village families, smoke inhalation (caused by inadequate stoves), a lack of clean water access, and poverty were the greatest and serious threats to their quality of life and to life itself.

The WPI chapter response will include their first implementation trip in the summer of 2011 as part of a five year commitment. This responsibility will be a three-level initiative:

·         implement a pilot project for the stoves,

·         implement a pilot project for water catchment tanks,

·         develop a system for micro-financing within the village community.

They are also in contact with a local Guatemalan Rotary Club, which is about 40 minutes away.

This WPI student chapter has a membership of about 25, and they are in charge of their own fundraising as well. They have their own website: http://users.wpi.edu/~ewbwpi/ and email address: ewb-execs@wpi.edu. All together, they rate a deserving, "well done."

These four students not only represented their college and their EWB chapter extremely well, but may have planted a seed of future partnership or support. As Mickey pointed out, it could be an opportunity for the Yarmouth Rotary to link up with another Rotary Club or to participate in an international project as we weigh different options.

Clarinets & Saxes

Posted by Tom Tomasik
The ME Small Elementary School music program is looking to add to it's inventory of instruments available for loan. Our Street Art Festival proceeds are a big part of the funding for this program. Saxophones and clarinets are especially in need, according to Patrick Riley, ME Small Music Director. The Saxophone is the most expensive instrument to rent and families are often asking to "rent" the school instruments. If you have a clarient or sax that is no longer needed or used, please consider donating it to the schools through our affilition with the Band Parents Association. They will provide you with a donation receipt for tax purposes. we will then have the instrument refurbished and placed into inventory. Brass and orchestral instruments are also in need. Keep you eyes open at yard sales for instruments that need a home as well. Please see Tom Tomasik or Mike Riley if you have questions or have an instrument to donate.

Yard Sale Treasure

Posted by Tom Tomasik
Do you enjoy yard sales? Be on the lookout for used band or orchestra instruments when you are rummaging through the trash and treasures. We can provide the owner a tax receipt for the full donation value (usually much more than the yard sale price) if they are willing to donate the instrument. We will then have it refurbished and put back into use in the Yarmouth Elementary schools music program. If the owners are not interested in the tax receipt, but a reasonable price can be negotiated we will reimburse you for the purchase of the instrument. So set your yard sale sights on musical instruments and everyone wins!

What's In A Shelter Box

Posted by Tom Tomasik
story thumbnail
Shelter
At the heart of every ShelterBox is a ten-person tent. It is custom made for ShelterBox by Vango, one of the world's leading tent manufacturers, and is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall. Internally, each tent has privacy partitions that allow recipients to divide the space as they see fit.

A smile
Every box contains a children's pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens. For children who have lostmost, if not all, their possessions, these small gifts are treasured.

Warmth and protection
In addition to the tent, the boxes contain a range of other survival equipment including thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, essential in areas where temperatures plummet at nightfall. Where malaria is prevalent mosquito nets are supplied, as well a life saving means of water purification. Water supplies often become contaminated after a major disaster, as infrastructure and sanitation systems are destroyed, this presents a secondary but no less dangerous threat to survivors than the initial disaster itself.

Self sufficiency
A basic tool kit containing a hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters can be found in every box. These items enable people to improve their immediate environment, by chopping firewood or digging a latrine, for example. Then, when it is possible, to start repairing or rebuilding the home they were forced to leave.

Fit for purpose
Every item is durable, practical and brand new. The box itself is lightweight and waterproof and has been used for a variety of purposes in the past - from water and food storage containers to a cot for a newly born baby.

A heart to the home
A key piece in every box is either a wood burning or multi-fuel stove - that can burn anything from diesel to old paint. This provides the heart of the new home where water is boiled, food is cooked and families congregate. In addition, there are pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers.

Adaptability
We keep a broad range of equipment in stock so we can adapt the contents of a box to a specific disaster. For example, following the Javanese earthquake in 2006, when some resources were available locally or could be salvaged fromone storey buildings, the overwhelming need was for shelter – so we just sent tents, packing two in each box.

Thought's from our dearly departed past member Dick Appleton:

"I've learned that you can tell alot about a man by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights."

Rotary Elevator Speech

So you're getting into an elevator, wearing your Rotary pin like a good Rotarian and the person next to you asks you "What is Rotary?".  Remember the elevators here on the Cape are very short so the response has to be brief.  Here's a brief synapsis of Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Yarmouth.

LET’S CRUISE

Posted by Mary Ann Gray

We formally kicked off the Yarmouth Rotary Fundraising Cruise.  Our speaker was Judy Bell of Cruise Holidays at the Stateline.  Cruise Holidays will handle all the bookings, answer Questions and special requests.  The cruise will take place on October 16 or October 23 for either a 14 day or 7 day cruise, originating in Venice.  The itinerary is very exciting, the Adriatic, Greek Isles, Athens, and Ephesus (Turkey).  This itinerary is very popular; the ship will likely sell out early.  You should book early in order to reserve a desired stateroom, space is limited. The ship is the Norwegian Gem, currently the newest ship in the line.  The fares, including air fare, and all transfers to and from the ship in Venice.   For example for the 14 day cruise an outside cabin with window will cost $2,929 per person, including the air package priced at $1,100.  These are extremely good prices.  These offers are for Rotarians, family and friends, so talk it up with others.  This is a FUNdraiser, the more that go, the more Yarmouth Rotary will receive.  Mary Ann Gray and Norm Weare have fliers, brochures and application forms, ask and ye shall receive.  We will be contacting other Rotary Clubs in District 7950.

What's A "Million Dollar Meal"?

Posted by Tom Tomasik
That's a pretty expensive breakfast you have there.  Actually a Million Dollar Meal is no meal at all, but a way to give to the Rotary Foundation.  The Million Dollar Meal concept was started in 1959 by a club in our district ( Stoughton).  It is now an established part of Rotary International fundrasing for The Rotary Foundation.

   ---A little history

In early November of 2000, a carbon monoxide scare forced residence of the West Yarmouth Inn out into the streets. The aftermath was the realization of the number of needy families, with children, residing in the motels along Route 28.  A group of Rotarians, Peter Carnes, Bruce Hill, Tom Martin, and Jack MacLelland, constituted a quickly formed committee to organize a Christmas party for these needy families.
