My Favourite Rotarians
If a President can have a favourite Rotarian then this week they are PP John Given and Trina Phillips PP Rotary Club of Macquarie Park.
John & Trina are the lead Rotarians behind the Rotary Clubs of NSW, NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards, now in their 12th year.
The event held last Friday night at the Hyatt Regency Sydney grand ballroom brought together 550 Rotarians and Police from across all NSW districts. Governors of each district had the pleasure of meeting our state's best police officers and acknowledging them with an award.
Planning for the event is a 10-month affair in collaboration with the Arinex event company. No detail is overlooked. From the confidential selection of final nominees and the winners by the Rotarian panel to the precision timing and organisation on the night.
An event that really should cost attendees triple the price is offered to all for an affordable $100 thanks to the contributions of the many sponsors and contributors. We are grateful to these businesses for their support.
A special thanks to John, Trina, and Arinex for their commitment to this event.
Please support Vision Beyond Aus by attending the golf day on Wednesday, May 25th at the prized Avondale Golf Club in Pymble.
A rare opportunity to visit this wonderful property. A classic golf course and a classic way to support this charity that was founded by your club.
VBA was established as part of Sydney Rotary’s international service in 2010 by Club Member Indy Singh, OAM, to provide free eye surgery to the world’s most disadvantaged people. Now an independent charity VBA, still led by Rotarian Indy Singh, has supported 46,095 surgeries, and Indy is determined to reach 100,000.
Rohan & Julia described how many MS staff in the different organisations have been touched by MS either themselves or a friend or family member. This makes progress towards a cure, all the more personal.
Progress to this end is being made and we await the findings of a 7-year-long Vitamin D study that will soon be released. A connection between vitamin D & MS has been supported however the new study is hoped to confirm the Vitamin D link and provide a focus for more research & trials in this area in either Progressive MS or Relapsing MS.
This year has been a significant year with the achievement of "Category 1 Funding" status for MS Research. This opens opportunities for more funding for research. Julia outlined the robust processes that MS Research has adopted for allocating funding to ensure the best options are backed.
We do hope that progress can be made to help the many Australians living with MS to live a better life and maintain hope for a cure.
I'd like to thank Rotarian Dr. Sonu Bhaskar for hosting the meeting and for the presentations by Rohan & Julia. Thanks also to Emily Robertson from MS Limited who provided an update on the progress being made with next week's MS Mega Swim at the Homebush Olympic pool. Thanks also to Rotarian Roni Corne for her vote of thanks to our guest speakers.
The Mega Swim is a wonderful event for Rotarian fellowship and to meet the wonderful people that donate their weekend and significant effort to raise money to support people living with MS.
