Special thanks to Libby and Greg for completing the final report for our 2023-2024 District Project Grant, and for completing the final report for our 2023-24 Youth Scholarship Grant as our Rotary Citizenship Awards. That support will be awarded at the end of June.
Thank you also to Kiraya Spencer, our incoming Club President, who participated in District Certification Training sessions in March/April and set Foundation Goals for PolioPlus and the Annual Fund. These steps ensure we have all the requirements to continue access Rotary District support for our projects.
Adopt a School Alotenango (Guatemala) – Phase II Global Grant Project Update
After months of planning meetings with our project partners in Guatemala, the final project global grant application has been submitted for approval by the Rotary Foundation!!
Project Partners – Wisehart Charity, Bendicion de Dios School, Club Rotario Nueva Guatemala (Host Rotary Club), and Rotary Club of Jasper (International Partner Club).
Total Funds Raised – during our year-long fundraising campaign is an amazing $91,732USD, including $39,155 from Rotary Clubs, $29,209 of District Designated Funds (DDF) from 2 Districts and $23,367 from World Fund (matching DDF by 80%)
Funding Partners –16 Rotary Club and Rotarian Funding Partners from 6 different Districts. Including 9 Clubs, 1 Rotarian, and DDF from our home District 5370: Jasper, Lloydminster, Slave Lake, Sherwood Park, Whitecourt, Grande Prairie, Drayton Valley, Edmonton-Glenora, Dawson Creek Sunrise, and Rotarian from Northwest Spirit. Funding partners from other Districts include: RC Nueva Guatemala (D4250), RC Calgary and RC Calgary West (D5360), RC Nanaimo (D5020), RC Yorba Linda California (D5320),RC Montreal Ville-Marie (D7040).
Final Project Elements to support this education & literacy project include: computers and furnishings for a 26 station computer lab in the new high school (grades 7-9), new furnishings for 5 classrooms, furniture & equipment for community resource room, furniture & equipment for admin office, 1-time school kitchen improvements (including new industrial stove), equipment to support vocation training programs (sewing, beauty/hairdressing), teacher training (with a focus on creative math, use of technology in education, and advance computer skills for computer lab teacher) and family support programs (including shoes for students and stoves for families).
Next Steps are authorizations of the global grant application by Host and International Partner Rotary Clubs, as well as Districts who are contributing funds, then review by the Rotary Foundation Grants Officers. We are hopeful the global grant application will be approved before the end of June this year.
As a reminder Alotenango is a rural farming community near Guatemala City with a population of 16,000+ people, 70% are indigenous, a 35% literacy rate and only 3 in 10 children graduate beyond grade 6!
With this project, we are creating hope for a better world by reducing povertyin a low-income Central American Country through education & literacy!
