Museum pilot program
Dinosaur Museum Tours
On November 19th we had our Club’s first trip of our new pilot project to the Dinosaur Museum. We had 14 students from the Camp Heal a Heart program which is organized through Grande Prairie Grief Society. The children ages from 9 – 16 have experienced some sort of trauma in their lives and 80% of them come from families that are below the poverty level. For most of them this was their first visit to the museum. Norm Lafleur SCRC and Taylor Mundy (President elect for Roteract) joined me and the councilors from the Camp Heal a Heart program. We gave a short presentation to the students on what Rotary is all about and the local activities we are involved with and opportunities for them to get involved such as Interact and our youth exchange programs. One student informed us that she had participated in the Greenathon.
We had a great day! We were bused out from the VC2000 in the Dinosaur bus to the Museum. Once there Jewels Goff gave us a presentation on fossils which was followed by an activity involving each student making a cast from a mold and identifying the dinosaur where the fossil came from. After the casts where made the students watched a movie about the flying dinosaurs followed by a tour of the museum and lunch. A great time was had by all. Norm, Taylor and I had a great opportunity for some fellowship and enjoyed the experienced. The students had a great time and were very appreciative.
Special thanks to Chris Andersen and Jerry Napier for their efforts to get his project going and the support from our club and the District with over $8,000 in funding. Strongly urge other members of our club to volunteer the next time Chris has arranged a SCTC tour for a deserving organization.
