Our Interact Club at South Valley Middle School, has adopted 3 families for Christmas, and they will be shopping for them on December 6th. Lisa Frizzell, the club sponsor, has asked for volunteers to help supervise students and help them manage their time and stay within the budget during the trip. The bus will pick the students up at SVMS 9:15am, so plan on meeting the students at Target 9:30am. Shoping would conclude around 11am. Each group of 10 kids will have the families' wish list to help them pick out gifts. Jen Rodgers (jrodgers@firststepsmo.com), our Rotary Club Liaison for SVMS, will be in attendance. |

Earnest Shepherd Youth Center Update & Fun Group Activity
Jan 16, 2019
The mission of Earnest Shepherd Youth Center is to provide educational leadership and recreational programs and facilities to area youth and the community. To facilitate this, we offer adventure programming to youth around the region. Located on 60 acres right here in Liberty, MO, the Youth Center is pleased to welcome youth year-round for programming that includes the opportunity to put down technology and learn about intrapersonal and interpersonal skills in themselves and each other. Our programs promote communication, teamwork and cooperation through initiative games. These initiative games are problem-solving physical and mental tasks that youth in groups are required to do. The ESMYC Executive Director, Sheila Bruns, M Ed., is happy to share the story of our organization, its successes and the potential we see in the future of youth. She can also adapt some of the techniques she uses with our clients every day to engage attendees in the presentation. Contact Beda Johnson at 816.781.7733 Update on recent youth success stories and share participation statistics for 2018.

THE REACH OUT AND READ CHALLENGE
February 23, 2019 is Rotary International’s 114th birthday. What better way to celebrate than to “Reach Out and Read”? Can we get EVERY club in district 6040 to reach out and read to a group of children, teens or adults during the week of Rotary International’s birthday (February 17th – 23rd, 2019)?
The Challenge:
During the week of Rotary International’s birthday, February 17th through February 23rd, 2019, organize members of your club to reach out and read in your local school, a nursing home, a residence for individuals with disabilities, etc. Be the inspiration and spread the joy of reading.
Take a picture of your club’s effort and send to Janet Gooch, District 6040 Literacy Chair at jquinzer@truman.edu and I’ll post it on the 6040 website. Let me know how many members were involved, the number of hours served, and other details that highlight the project.
Use the event to promote Rotary and your club via Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media. I will attempt to post the success of the district project on Rotary Showcase.
Think about the impact on our communities if every club in our district reaches out and reads, connecting with others and spreading the joy of literacy in celebration of Rotary International’s Birthday.

We are going to do some repairs to the pavilion prior to our "Paint Day" on April 6th. There are some areas around the doors that need fixing, some gutter areas that need replacing, a couple of cabinet doors that need re-setting, and the area above the bathroom needs cleaning out!!!! The "repair" crew has been working on creating a budget list for repairs. The focus of our plan for today is to clean out the inside of the Plaza building so repairs and painting can take place. We have one good ladder and could use another if someone has one available. |

According to our Master Gardeners in Town and Couintry Garden club we do not need to throw mulch in the garden this year, so we are going to paint the pavilion inside and out!!! Our repair crew (Ken Barry, Frank Dixon, and Jeff Bennett) has been hard at work the past several weeks getting the Pavilion ready to paint and the "Pod" people (you know who you are) have moved all the tables and chairs out, so all that is left is to PAINT! We have a food service committe that has plans for keeping us hydrated and fed! What to bring: paint brush, paint bucket/tub, and anyone old enough to hold a brush! |
