Walk to End PolioOn September 11, the Rotary Club of Fort Saskatchewan is holding a fund raising event Walk to end Polio. Rotary as a whole, has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and has made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent. It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free. “If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. That is unacceptable,” states Stew Hennig, Walk committee chair. “Anyone wanting to participate as a walker/runner can contact us at fortsaskrotaryclub@gmail.com. Our goal is to raise $5,000 with each participant raising a minimum of $100.” People can participate in a fun walk of 1, 2 or 5 kms or a fun run of 5 or 10 kms. We will also be accepting donations if people do not want to actually walk or run. We’re close to eradicating polio, but we’re not done yet. We still need funds to continue immunization and surveillance efforts. Your gift will get us closer to the finish line. |

Fort Club Adopts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion StatementRotary International has as a top priority for Rotary, to grow and diversify our membership to make sure we reflect the communities we serve and are inclusive of all cultures, experiences, and identities. We're creating an organization that is more open and inclusive, fair to all, builds goodwill, and benefits our communities. To help us achieve our goal, the RI Board of Directors passed a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statement and on July 29, 2020 the Fort Saskatchewan Rotary Club officially adopted the same statement. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement: As a global network that strives to build a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Rotary will cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in which people from underrepresented groups have greater opportunities to participate as members and leaders. “Rotary has a long history of being non-political, nonpartisan and non-religious”, states Ted Griffiths, President of the Fort Saskatchewan Rotary Club. “Rotary has a long history going back to the United Nations 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rotary is only one of two non-country flags that fly at the UN. However given world events of late, our club felt it was important to formally take a stand and declare our beliefs around diversity, equity and inclusion.” The local club also approved an action plan to continue to work on fulfilling the intention of the diversity, equity and inclusion statement. |

Rotary Club of Fort Saskatchewan celebrates The Rotary Foundation CentennialFort Saskatchewan, June 28, 2017 — The Rotary Club of Fort Saskatchewan hosted their annual executive change over with special recognition of four (4) local individuals, in celebration of the centennial of The Rotary Foundation. “We presented Paul Harris awards to Maria Basaraba, Terry Noble and Harold & Maxine Reichstein, for their support and dedication to our club” stated incoming President Stew Hennig. The Foundation is the $1 billion charitable arm of Rotary International. To mark the centennial, Rotary aims to raise $300 million by July 2017 for its campaign to eradicate polio and for service in communities around the world. Established in 1917 with a donation of $26.50, The Rotary Foundation is dedicated to advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. Through grants and other resources, Rotary members develop sustainable projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, save mothers and children, and grow local economies. “Our club contributes $1,000 every year to the Foundation, plus our members individually contribute over four times that amount” outlined Robert Thomas, club foundation chair. “We are able to apply for grants based on our donations, and use those grants to support local projects such as the STSS Handivan, Families First and high school scholarships. Rotary’s top priority is the global eradication of polio. Rotary launched its polio immunization program, PolioPlus, in 1985 and in 1988 became a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative along with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and more recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to eradicate polio. Through 2018, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, up to $35 million a year. Since the initiative began, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 71 confirmed in 2015. |

Alberta Bands Together Raises $1,400 in Fort SaskatchewanWell done everyone. Last evenings Alberta Bands Together event went off without a hitch. The bands were fabulous, the music superb, the volunteers plentiful, and the crowd enthusiastic. They were not large in numbers but they were generous and willing to donate.
We took in in cash donations for the music and the water, $1,398.15. There will be one or two cheques coming in so all told, the night was a success. Special thanks to the staff of the Funky Mango food truck for donating all $42 of their tips from tonight. We are pleased to be donating that amount of money to the District 5370 Charitable Foundation's Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund.
Thank you to the Shell Theatre staff for the work they did today. Thank you to the Rotary and friends of Rotary who volunteered. Thank you to the COPS and the municipal enforcement that came out for traffic control and to Staff Sgt. Tewfick who provided security. Thanks to our fire staff and EMS for standing ready for any emergency. Thanks Josh for everything you did but most of all, thank you to the marvellous performers who gave their time to help create the night we had. You are all terrific and I love you all for what you have done. Well done, all.

Rotary Club Holding Book Sale June 18 & 19 For Imagination LibraryThe Fort Saskatchewan Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Fort Saskatchewan Library, will be holding a used book sale June 18 and 19. Funds raised will be split between the two organizations, with Rotary’s share going towards our Imagination Library project.
“The Dolly Parton Foundation Imagination Library project is the largest project the Fort Saskatchewan Rotary Club has ever undertaken. This project will be focused on Fort Saskatchewan children and we estimate that the cost, for the first five years will be $125,000, based on growth projections.” states Kathy Stevenson, project chair. “Our goal is to raise the full five years of funding before starting the registration process.”
Established in 1995 this program mails high quality, age-appropriate books directly to the homes of registered families for children 0 – 5 years of age. It is a proven fact that children who are read to from birth are much more likely to excel in class when they begin school. Another benefit is that parent literacy levels also increase as they read to their children.
“To date the club has raised $7,500 and once we get our charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency, we will be launching our major fundraising campaign” shared Terry Stacey, project vice-chair.
The book sale will be held at the Library from 9am-3pm on Saturday, June 18 and on Sunday, June 19th from 1:00 am until 4:00pm. On the Saturday books will be $0.50 each and Sunday a bag of books will sell for $1.00. Anyone wanting to donate books for the sale can do so by bringing them to the Library by noon, June 17.

Art Donated to HospitalTwo pieces of art were unveiled November 12 by the Rotary Club and the Tinkler family in the Rotary Room at the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital. “Tom was a proud Rotary Member (Paul Harris fellow) and a fabulous artist” stated Stew Hennig. “The club approached his widow Nan and asked if we could acquire a couple of Tom’s paintings to decorate the Rotary quiet room in emergency. Nan and the Tinkler family were kind enough to donate two paintings. It is a fitting way to remember this great man by showcasing his artwork and bringing some solice to others as they use this quiet room.”
Tom had passions for art, his church community, his appreciation for all aspects of nature and Rotary. Tom attended the Kingston College of Art which led him to a career as a graphic designer, engraver and then as the Creative Director of Public Affairs for the Government of Alberta. His art is displayed in galleries, businesses and homes throughout Japan and England, as well as many cities in Canada, in addition to the Alberta Legislature. “We appreciate the donation from the Tinkler family and all the support we receive from the Rotary Club.” stated Christine Sheasgreen, Chair of the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital Foundation. |

The local Rotary Club did just that be both providing a monetary donation, and members volunteered their time and effort to make “Frank on the Roof” a success for Families First. |

Fort Rotary Club Fundraising For More WheelchairsNovember 10, 2013, Fort Saskatchewan: The Rotary Club of Fort Saskatchewan is once again raising funds to send more wheelchairs to Belize. “Our project earlier this year was very successful and the club had some extra funds left over and decided to put it towards another wheelchair project” stated Robert Thomas international projects chair. “In fact we have had funding commitments from the Lac La Biche Rotary Club and several other clubs are looking at joining us in fundraising as well.” With Christmas right around the corner many people, not just Rotarians, look for charitable giving gifts that give back in a more meaningful way. By giving even a small amount to the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation’s Rotary Club of Fort Saskatchewan District 5370 fund, you help in building the fund closer to the goal of $16,500 for a small container of 110 wheelchairs. Anyone wanting to make a donation can find a donation form on the clubs web site located at http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?cid=465 “We saw the need in March when our team was in Belize. Diabetes is the main cause for many people to have lost limbs and they can’t afford the cost of a proper wheelchair. We met people that had not been out of bed in 2 years, 4 years, it was heartbreaking” outlined Terry Stacey, public relations chair, and one of the four club members that went to Belize. “We know Fort Saskatchewan is a giving community and we are just providing another avenue for people to make a difference in the world.” Rotary is an organization that believes in humanitarian service at home and abroad. Most clubs have local and international projects on the go all the time. Fort Saskatchewan’s Rotary Club is no different having just contributed $10,000 towards STSS buying a new vehicle, providing two $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school students, and leading Operation Red Nose that gave back to youth projects this year in the neighbourhood of $8,000. |

100 Wheelchairs for Belize
NEWS RELEASEFor immediate release _______________________________________________
Rotary Club Taking Wheelchairs to Belize
FORT SASKATCHEWAN, ALBERTA, February 4, 2013 – A four year project is coming to fruition for the Fort Saskatchewan Rotary Club at the end of the month when club members will be travelling to Belize (formerly British Honduras) to distribute 110 wheelchairs.
``We are very excited about this international project`` stated Robert Thomas, International Service chairperson. ``The club has been fundraising for 4 years and raised, through donations and matching grants, the $20,000 needed to complete this project.``
The wheelchairs were obtained through the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation and have been shipped to Belize. Everything that Rotary does is club to club so that all funds raised go directly into the project. The receiving club is the Belize City Rotary Club and they will assist the Fort`s club members in distributing them where they are most needed.
``Belize was chosen, as District 5370, of which Fort Saskatchewan is a part, has had an ongoing literacy project in that country for over 5 years” explained Thomas. “We wanted to build off of those efforts.”
Four club members will be making the trip down – Carol Devereux, Ellen Kranz, Jana Rowe and Terry Stacey. An added bonus is that the Belize Rotary District conference is taking place when the ladies are down there, so they will be attending that as well and seeing how Rotarians work in that country.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many people need wheelchairs but cannot afford one? A: It is estimated that at least 100 million children, teens and adults worldwide need a wheelchair but cannot afford one. Some international organizations believe that the number could be as high as 6% of the population of developing countries. The number in Angola is 20% of population of 12 million people. Other "landmine" countries such as Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bosnia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Mozambique have extremely high physical disability rates.
Q: Where are the wheelchairs manufactured? A: We purchase wheelchairs from a manufacturer in China that builds quality, medical-grade wheelchairs designed to be easily maintainable in developing countries.
Q: What donation amount is required to deliver a wheelchair to a person in need? A: For every donation of $150 we can purchase and deliver a wheelchair to our international and national distribution partners. Wheelchairs of similar quality would normally sell for $600 in Canada. Often these types of wheelchairs sell for up to $1,800 in developing countries. Christiana Flessner Executive Director Canadian Wheelchair Foundation P.O.
