Membership

Rotary club members are part of a diverse group of professionals and community leaders working to address a wide range of community and international service needs. Rotary club members help promote peace and understanding throughout the world through service and fellowship. Our members are our most important asset--the power that allows Rotary to carry out its many humanitarian efforts and achieve its mission.

Each Rotary club strives for a membership that is a current and progressive representation of its community's business, vocational, and professional interests. Membership in Rotary offers a number of benefits, including:

  • The opportunity to effect change within the community
  • Development of leadership skills
  • The opportunity to gain an understanding of - and have an impact on - international humanitarian issues.
  • Relationships with community and business leaders

If you are interested in membership by a local Rotary club other than this club, you will find information on the Rotary District 5170 site to get started.

Palo Alto University Rotary (PAUR) has grown from 36 founding members in 1989 to over 100 members in 2018.  While we have seen growth in numbers, we have also maintained continuity and quality, with many of our past presidents remaining active and integral members of the club.  In addition to having a large number of active past-presidents, many of the founding members of the club are still active, and they help to hold us true to our founding principles.  We honor the leaders who have guided the club to its present position, and we are actively planning for the next generation of dynamic Rotary leaders.

Our members are committed to service, to the ideals of Rotary, and to each other.  We have a strong connection with the Palo Alto community, contributing to the health and education of both the young and the old.  In addition we reach beyond our community to positively impact the health, education, and economic well-being of our friends living in Caluco, El Salvador.

Among the first clubs to warmly welcome women into Rotary, we are proud to say that women make up over 40% of the membership.  We have active members from all over the world, and members speak English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.  We also consider ourselves a young club, both in age and spirit, with members ranging in age from 23 to 96.

Members’ professions reflect the diversity of Silicon Valley as well.  We are well-represented in the following professions and industries:  accounting, architecture, banking/finance, consulting, engineering, health care, higher education (including a special relationship with Stanford University), investment management, law, nonprofit organizations, publishing, real estate, technology, and venture capital.  We have a number of entrepreneurs in the group, which results in a lot of interesting programs!

PAUR is recruiting people who will actively contribute to the goals of the club, including participation in both our service projects and our club activities.  We are looking for members who share our values and who will enhance our creative, dynamic, and diverse population.
