2013

The Burnsville Club and the Rotary Clubs of Los Osos, CA and Kigali - Virunga, Rwanda have adopted the village of Nyamateke in Nyarubuye sector in Kirehe District of Rwanda, East Africa to implement a matching grant. By equipping the school with clean water, adequate latrines, textbooks and desks, the school will also become a center for adult education.  The teachers, pupils and community leaders will be trained in hygiene and sanitation practices so that they can maintain the latrines and the safe water supply chain.  They will also be trained how to construct latrines, and how to repair and maintain the borehole and pump.  This first phase of the intervention should take about 18 months to implement, and will cost about $55,000.00.

The second and third phases of the project will focus on providing social, economic and health care assistance.  This will involve providing computers, a source of solar power for the school, providing micro credit to stimulate economic activity, and livestock animals for the families. A health care clinic will also be established at or near the school, with help from health care professional volunteers recruited by Rotarians.
