OUR GUEST SPEAKER Lynne Paradis

Rotarian Lynne  Paradis will tell us about Literacy Alive, a quality humanitarian literacy project that is entering its ninth  Rotary International global grant in operation.  The project works with Belize schools and community libraries in improving child and adult literacy.  Given the devastating impact covid had on Belize schools, which closed for two years, a national crisis for children has been identified by the Belize government.  Literacy Alive is working with the government and approximately 100 schools in two of Belize provinces/districts with a strategic and focussed reading intervention program.  Literacy leaders from Canada have worked with Belize to implement a reading rescue project that began in September 2022 and is scheduled to wrap up in May 2023.  Hundreds of Belize educators were trained on the program during a vocational training team visit to Belize in May and August 2022.  The project continues with additional support being provided on site in Belize in November 2022, Feb 2023 and  May 2023 along with periodic check ins via digital communication.

Dr. Lynne Paradis, project lead, will be joined by two of the graduate university students who worked on the project and Dr. George Georgiou who designed the project (U of Alberta Special Education faculty) and will share the nature of the project and progress to date.

The potential for Edmonton West to become actively involved in the project will be presented with a few options shared about possible participation.

For keen readers a summary report of the August 2022 portion of the global grant project is attached.  It outlines the activities and evaluation feedback.
