OUR GUEST SPEAKER Nancy Lavimizadeh

Nancy Lavimizadeh established and directs Apadana Housing for Women in Need.

Nancy came to Canada from Iran October 1993 to go to university and have a better future for herself and her family.  She graduated from business school in 2000 having studied general public accounting.  While working on her degree, she took break from  school in 1994 for her daughter and in 1996 for her son.

Since 2002 she has been helping abused women while continuing her full time job as an accountant.

She met with the Sisters of Providence in 2009, helping them with accounting and bookkeeping.  She was spending more time to doing voluntary work with them than with her own family, because she loved the work so much.

In 2011 the Sisters of Providence decided to move to BC and the Montreal-based owner of the building in which the Sisters lived and worked with abused women decided to sell the building.  They asked Nancy if she was interested and she said yes!

The owner gave Nancy a good price on the property to continue what the Sisters had been doing for 88 years from 1924 to 2012 – helping hundreds of women who stayed in this building called Rosary Hall.

In March 2012 Nancy began working on Apadana and the doors have been open to all kind of women since July 2012.  Apadana means ancient Persian palaces.

Apadana is a part of Edmonton history and Nancy’s goal is to continue what she is doing, making the place more useful for all women in need, including those with young children for the present and generations to come.
