Rotary International President: Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, Sweden
District 6040 Governor: Jerry W. Venters, K.C. Plaza
During my term we received the Presidential Citation, got a District Simplified Grant as well as funding from other sources to begin the Sensory Garden, and awarded nine Paul Harris Fellow designations to club members. We participated in District Conference and provided an exhibit on the Sensory Garden at the conference. We hosted members of the Group Study Exchange team from New Zealand at a 3-club luncheon during which they presented their program. Prior to the that team's arrival, Lynn Schwarz of Plattsburg, MO reported on her year studying in New Zealand as an Ambassadorial Scholar. This was the first full year of meeting at the Benton Club. We received donations from members and/or discounts from Sam's Club to acquire the piano and projector for use at our meetings. It was also the year we switched our bookkeeping software from Club Mate to QuickBooks for Non-Profits. We started the recruitment process to get Travis Rice accepted as an Ambassadorial Scholar.
Ken Shearin upset incumbent David Jones in the bid for Mayor; Mr. Shearin, known as a person that enjoyed stirring things up, promised 'to behave if elected' in a speech before the club. Chris Connally spoke to the club after he was chosen the next Chief of Police, replacing retiring Mike Hirter. Mike became Deputy Mayor during his election to City Council.
The club participated in a literacy project in conjunction with the other two St. Joseph Rotary clubs, with our club funding the purchase of a Scholastic paperback book for every child at Hall Elementary School.
The club by-laws were revised and updated with Lynn Watkins and Mel McLean guiding that project.
The board engaged in a five year strategic planning process and extended the process to the entire club.
Pat Dillon received the club's Award of Excellence for his many and varied volunteer activities.
