WISEST: Women in Scholarshop, Engineering, Science & Technology

Fervone Goings completed her M. Sc. in Environmental Microbiology & Technology at the U of A.  After graduation, she worked in research and then pursued other endeavors including starting a business with her  husband, raising a family and working in the non-profit sector for over 10 years.  In her current role as WISEST Team Lead at the University of Alberta she combines both of her major career trajectories, scientific research and non-profit administration.  Through WISEST's mission to encourage diversity and empower women in science, engineering & technology she is delighted to be advocating for, and supporting students to overcome barriers they face as they pursue post secondary education and career choices.  Fervone also supports diversity initiatives across the province as a Board Member with the AWSN (Alberta Women's Science Network) and nationally as Treasurer for CCWESTT (Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology).

Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, & Technology (WISEST) focuses on creating effective programs to empower women (and other underrepresented groups) to pursue, impact, and succeed in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

What makes WISEST effective?

WISEST has over 36 years of creating awareness of and breaking down the barriers to diversity in science, engineering, and technology, and focuses on the following priorities:
Engagement: providing hands-on experiences and outreach opportunities to challenge perceived perceptions.
Education: promoting curiosity-based academic and career opportunities for participants.
Application: equipping students to succeed through mentorship and role models.
