The fitness commitment -- why the traditional fitness industry model has faltered
Jul. 24, 2018 7:15 a.m.
GUEST SPEAKER: Tony Nguyen -- Fitness Coach & Registered Kinesiologist (of F.R.E.E. Fitness Inc.) While growing up in Whitehorse, Yukon, Tony was an avid athlete. After high school, he was recruited to play on the Augustana men’s basketball team. As a member of the Vikings, he learned skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and time-management—skills which would serve him well later when he started up his personal training business.
I love meeting new people, helping clients, promoting fitness, and giving back to the community. While living in Edmonton, I've been fortunate to have had great mentors and role models. I want to offer that same experience to Edmonton's fitness community and to have a positive impact on people's lives. |

"Rotary-Lite" - Club business & social
Oct. 16, 2018 7:15 a.m.
Just for a change of pace, we are taking next week's meeting (October 16) "on the road."
That means that we will not be meeting at the Royal Glenora Club next week.
Our venue for next week will be the Rooster Cafe, 10732 82 (Whyte) Avenue. The meeting time is the same as usual.
This is a restaurant that specializes in breakfast, and you will be able order from the full menu (which you might like to check out ahead of time online https://roosterkitchen.ca).
We are describing this meeting as "Rotary-lite," which means there no guest speaker, no sergeant and just a few announcements. It will be an opportunity to enjoy those conversations with other Rotarians that are often cut short.
Now remember, DO NOT go to the Royal Glenora next Tuesday.
See you at the Rooster. |

Starlight Performance Camp
Oct. 23, 2018 7:15 a.m.
Starlight Performance Camp was founded in 2016 by Dr. Roxanne, resident in pediatrics at the University of Calgary and Andrée Vincent, MD/MBA candidate of the class of 2019 at the University of Alberta. The two met in 2012 as members of the Edmonton Eskimos Cheerleading Team. One day, upon reflecting on their experiences in dance, gymnastics and cheerleading, they realized that they had gained so much of their confidence from these activities. Roxanne said: "You know what, let's do something for the kids!" - And that's how Starlight began.
They founded the camp to share their thrill for performance with children who often feel restricted by their condition. "Let's make them feel like stars!" said Andrée. They registered their initiative under the Medical Students Association of the University of Alberta and got right to work. In their search for funding and support, they came across a call for applications for the Emerging Leaders in Health Promotion grant program. The ELiHP program is a grant program from the Alberta Medical Association which is jointly funded by the AMA and the Canadian Medical Association and its subsidiaries, MD Financial Management and Joule. With the support of the ELiHP grant, Starlight was able to kick off it's first camp in the summer of 2017. |

Rotary Matters: Vision for Rotary in our district
Oct. 30, 2018 7:15 a.m.
Former Victoria School of the Arts principal, Ingrid Neitsch, will be governor in 2018-19 of a Rotary International district covering parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. “Rotarians are the unsung heroes in the community. They are involved in amazing projects around the world that have changed lives. “In many places, they have brought disaster relief, better health care, more educational opportunities and economic benefits, and almost eradicated polio (99.9 per cent). And yet many citizens are unaware of Rotary.” |

Christmas time is perfect for giving something special to inner city children in need. This year the Rotary Club of Edmonton South, in partnership with other local Rotary Clubs, the Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Boys & Girls Club of Edmonton, will lead the 3rd Annual Santa Clothes Program in Edmonton! The goal is to serve no less than 100 children with new winter clothes and shoes.
