Christmas time is perfect for giving something special to inner city children in need. This year the Rotary Club of Edmonton South, in partnership with other local Rotary Clubs, the Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Boys & Girls Club of Edmonton, will lead the 3rd Annual Santa Clothes Program in Edmonton! The goal is to serve no less than 100 children with new winter clothes and shoes. Old Navy at West Edmonton Mall will also provide an exclusive shopping experience for the children with 50% off everything in the store. Costs for the event include $200 per child clothing budget, bus transportation, a private marine park experience and lunch for the 100 children and 30 volunteers. For 2018, Edmonton South Rotary has stepped in with a lead gift that will cover the clothing for 50 children. They are asking sister Clubs to participate in this event by providing sponsorship donations and volunteer support. We are invited to personally join for this day of giving and pleasure! Christmas Tag Day In Support of Operation Friendship Seniors Society (OFSS) It's really a work bee, and Operation Friendship Seniors Society (plus their partners, London Drugs and CFCW) would love our help. What exactly will we be doing? Preparing/writing tags for the "Stocking Stuffers for Seniors" program. Each tag will contain the name of a senior in need, plus the items that senior has indicated would make his/her Christmas bright. About 4000 tags need to be prepared. In case you're wondering, these tags will go on the Christmas trees in London Drugs stores. Then, when you're out Christmas shopping, you simply head into a London Drugs, pick a tag, purchase the items listed, and leave them (along with the tag) with the cashier. Those items will be wrapped and given to that senior for Christmas. The work of preparing/writing the tags starts at 9 am and goes until it's finished (2 pm is just a rough estimate), but you can drop in for just an hour or stay as long you like. There's no knowing how long it will take, so you might want to come earlier rather than later so you don't miss out. If you're planning to come, please send Sandra Bayrock sabayrock@shaw.ca an email with your name and, if possible, the approximate time you plan on arriving. The OFSS folks need to know who to expect.

Operation Esperanza -- 2019 trip to Ecuador
Apr. 09, 2019 7:15 a.m.
Without access to essential surgical and medical interventions, many people in Cuenca, Ecuador, are condemned to life in wheelchairs – a fate that can leave entire families financially destitute. It was this reality that inspired Dr. Thomas H. Greidanus, an Edmonton orthopedic surgeon, to create Operation Esperanza, an organization dedicated to helping the people of Cuenca. “We see many women who are in their early 30s with arthritis in one or both hips,” explains Dr. Greidanus. “And then they can’t work, they can’t look after their families and often they are abandoned by their husbands because of it. Having a hip replacement is life changing, not only because the pain is gone, but because it gives them back their lives.” Each year, Dr. Greidanus leads a multidisciplinary medical mission to Cuenca to offer medical care and pediatric and adult surgeries that might otherwise be out of reach. Over the past 22 years, he and his team have seen as many as 250 patients each visit and performed dozens of surgeries for patients living with debilitating conditions. They’ve also worked to help educate and inform the people of Cuenca on how to prevent hip injuries. “We noticed early on that way they wrap their babies or carry them in slings increases their risk for dislocated hips. We know that it’s difficult to change the things they’ve learned from their mothers and grandmothers, and that’s why education is key.” Although coordinating the travel arrangements and overseeing the donation and transportation of necessary equipment and medication requires considerable time and effort from Dr. Greidanus, he stresses that it’s worth it. “It’s been so rewarding to be able to help people who would never be able to have this kind of surgery,” he notes. “We have an incredible team with such amazing spirit, who really care for and connect with the patients. We all give a lot, but we get so much back in return.” An annual fundraising event is held each year to support Operation Esperanza’s ongoing work. |
