Happy Leaving

It was a 'Happy Leaving' as our friend and colleague Kristen Hudson departed for Toronto. Kristen has been a reliable and friendly face at our meetings over the past many years, preceding most of our current members. Kristen, you will be missed and we hope that you find another lucky Rotary Club to join.

The founder of FreeFootie Tim Adams then came and spoke to club at the regular lunch meeting. In five years the FreeFootie movement has grown to include 60 Edmonton Schools, real soccer games are organized in leagues and even transport is laid on.

Rotary Aboard the Santa Maria

A good crew of members boarded the Santa Maria at WEM on September 13th in an 'open ship' event designed to introduce us to our WEM neighbours.  Though the crowd of newcomers was not huge, the contacts made were solid and the newcomers interested in what Edmonton Mayfield Rotary offers.  We also think we sold a table at Fork It Over!

Thanks to Maureen and Derek for putting it all together with decor, snacks, invitations and venue arrangements.

Meeting of June 4, 2014

Posted by Julius Buski on Jun 03, 2014

Past President Nonie Buski chaired the meeting today, filling in for Linda who was away visiting her new grandchild.

Julius was greeter, said grace, and served as scribe.  Jaima led us in O Canada.

We had one guest today - Janet Lywood.

Julius tried leading us in the welcome song but started at too high a pitch and quickly found himself out of range.  Thankfully, most of the club members were able to see it through

It was our pleasure to induct our newest member today - Dr. Arif Alibhai.  Arif (pronounced Ah-REEF - emphasis on the second syllable) was sponsored by Zaheer.  PDG Julius conducted the induction after which all club members came up to personally welcome Arif into the Best Darn Rotary Club in the Whole Wide World.  Arif's classification is Public Health.  In welcoming Arif into our club, Nonie reminded all members of the need to continue seeking out prospective members for the club.

Julius presented today's Rotary Minute - speaking to how Rotary in many way resembles a religion - and vice versa.

Rob won the draw but his luck ran out at that stage.

Terry Kirkland reminded members that our meeting will be held at Brightview School next week.  The food will be delivered to the school by 10:45.   Terry needs 2 or 3 volunteers to join him at the school at 11:15 to set up the Bar-B-Que , condiments, drinks etc. The first class will be ready for lunch at 11:40.  Volunteers should arrive between 11:30 and 11:40. The lunch component including clean-up lasts until about 1:00 PM. The activities and the opportunity to immerse yourself in a load of fun carries on for about another hour.

Finemaster Rob Speers collected Happy Bucks today.  Members related much happiness.

Tim is off to Halifax.

Frank and Shirley Bell have just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary!  Congratulations!

Jess has 2 horse-loving daughters off to the Preakness.

Gill is off to the coast for sailing and Chris is on the rebound.

Terry spent time with his 2 year old granddaughter.  Always nice to send them home.

Jamia was looking forward to breakfast on Sunday with Zaheer and Salma at the World Partners Walk.

Derek was celebrating his fourth great-grandchild.

Mike looked very snazzy today - dressed up for a photo op?  wedding? or some other important engagement.

Brian was happy to have their daughter visiting them for a while.

And such was today's joy at Mayfield.

Our speaker, Rob Speers, was ably and briefly introduced by Frank Bell, since this was Rob's classification talk.  Rob advised us that he was in full audio visual mode - he was the audio and his photos on powerpoint were the visual.

Rob was born in Edmonton on Sept 27, 1957 and adopted at 4 months of age, on Robbie Burns Day.  He has a passion for sports and in grade 9 played football with the JP Lions as an outside linebacker.  He attended Stratford Junior High School and then Jasper Place Composite High School for 4 years, where he played football, basketball and volleyball.  Rob continued playing basketball until about two years ago.

After high school, Rob attended NAIT, taking business, but hated accounting, which probably explains why his job today involves selling accounting software!

His business career has included employment with QCTV, Ed Tel, Gray Beverages, Sony of Canada, Maxell, Matrix Video and presently with Wi-Band.

Rob has a share in the Green Bay Packers [but that's another story] and loves to cook and golf.  We were also interested to learn that he plays the guitar, and has four of these in his collection.  He is married to Anne.

Once again, hearing from our own members is often one of the best programs we have, and today was no exception.  It's great to have you in our club, Rob!

Jess thanked Rob for his presentation.

There being the required sufficient time, master story teller Harvey Emas regaled us with a couple of good ones.

We closed the meeting with the 4 Way Test and a toast to Rotary.

REMEMBER - The meeting next week is at Brightview.

We received a report and email from Dr John Godel after his recent trip to Uganda. John emailed ' My trip was tiring but satisfying. I want to repeat how grateful we are to Mayfield Rotary for the support we have had over the years and I would like to add my own appreciation for the years of support you've given us. The project has taken on a life of its own and it largely a result of your unfailing support.'

THE CLUB'S THE KEY SAYS DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP CO-CHAIR

Posted by Julius Buski

Talking to an appreciative audience at his home club of Edmonton Mayfield on February 15, District 5370 Membership Co-Chair Eden Hampson outlined some of his thoughts on membership development and retention.

Hampson, a former Mayfield club president and long time member with over 30 years in Rotary, spoke about his own research he had undertaken, interviewing (by phone or e-mail) individuals who had left Rotary clubs in the district during the preceding year.  The number one reason he found - people left Rotary because they were overwhelmed.

A number of factors enter into this, he said.  In today's world, there is a large number of fractured families.  An individual may be dealing with one or more ex-spouses, children from several marriages and many work-related responsibilities - all of this eats up time.

Secondly, the job market is much different today than it was 30 years ago.  In the past, Rotarians were typically from the upper enchelons of the business community and had been in their position for many years.  They had a lot of experience and were major decision makers.  Today, the average time people spend in a position is much shorter and they are over tasked.

The problem of membership retention is not unique to Rotary, said Eden.  It is one being encountered by churches and other organizations.  However, if we do not address it, Rotary will be a dying organization.

One of our difficulties is that Rotary has become an organization where there is too much coming from "head office."  We have forgotten that Rotary International itself doesn't have members - the clubs have members and that is the key.  District leaders must remember that they are there to serve the clubs.

If we are going to attract new members, we have to keep changing at the same pace as society.

He offered a number of suggestions clubs might keep in mind:

- Cut down on the number of committees and unnecessary busy work.  Task individuals with responsibilities and let them get on with the job.

- Re-examine "the sacred cows we've been married to."  The older generation might have thought these important - the new generation doesn't.

- Rotary has to be fun and cannot be repetitive.  That starts with the president of the club.  The president has to be aware of two things.  First, that they are running an organization and it's not a popularity contest.  People have to follow you because they respect you, not because they like you.  Second, when assigning responsibilities, pick the right people for the job - otherwise the club will flounder.

- Be cognizant of the fact that new people coming into Rotary don't have the extra time that Rotarians did in the past.  Do not overwhelm them with responsibilities.  We have to be aware of what we're committing to and of the costs of resources available.

Hampson also stressed that more and more people coming into Rotary are no longer at the top management level and our expectations of them must be different than they have been in the past.  We must be aware of their different financial and time resources.

An interesting point made by him is that we have two groups of people in our clubs who are at huge risk -- those who are new to the club and have nothing to gain by being there and those who are senior to the club and have nothing to lose by leaving!  Basically, two thirds of our membership is at risk.

While hopeful about the future, he also stressed that we need to change and also need to provide good resources and training at the district level.

Eden's excellent presentation is one other clubs would profit from hearing.

I've been keeping incredibly busy.  I am studying now, I've got 5 classes that i'm getting grades in now (German, History, Math, Gym and English), so i've always got something to keep myself busy with.  The language is coming, it's good enough that I can follow in my classes (some better then others!), and take notes and whatnot.  I know my grades won't be anywhere near at par with what they were like in Canada, but what should i expect?  I wrote a mathematics test today and so I'll see how I did on that.  I'm really interested to see if i was able to keep up with the class while learning words like Schnittwinkle! I still find it difficult to understand while taking notes, and there's always times when i've got to pull out the dictionary and look up a word or two during lectures which slows me down quite a bit.

Happy New Year, And a Merry Christmas!!!

Hello to Everyone!!

As Christmas time crept in, so did the traditons.   I was there to see a perktin lauf:

(What is a perktin Lauf you ask ?...... read on for Everett's adventure in Austria this Holiday season)

Austria is still incredible, and this month has truly been a unique and brand new experience for me.  The last week of school we had our schools open door.
It was fun to take part in, and see how schools attracted new students to there school.  I found myself dressed in many random articles of clothes, posing with some of my classmates, making "modern art".  I went skiing with my host family, which was amazing.  How many people can say that they've gone skiing in the Alps!! The snow wasn't incredible (it was half man made), but the weather was warm, and my current host family is a lot of fun to be with, so i still, somehow managed to have a good time;)

This program, known as "Food For Thought", will ensure that all of the approximately 200 students at Brightview start each and every day with a nutritious breakfast. Research has suggested that academic performance is improved when children are properly nourished and thus, through this program, we will be doing our part to help these children achieve their best possible futures. At the November 19th meeting, Judy Saylar was recognized as a gold sponsor for her support of the program (see image).

so I figured a nice long email would do the trick. Where to start (that's the hard part), so I'm just going to jump right in where I hope I left off.

Everything is going great though, I've been immersing myself in the culture, eating fleischknodel, and i've bought lederhosen!! (picture attached)

Deloitte Foundation was approached by club member Marilyn Mucha to provide funding for bicycle helmets and Pedal Pushers training for students at Brightview Elementary school.  The Mayfield club project to assist in the supply of bicycles for students followed the lead of one of the school's teachers noticing how few students had access to a bikes.  She took it upon herself to acquire bikes from the Police auction.  On Sept. 24, 2008, School principal Tony Kernaghan is seen at the cheque presentation for $2,000. from representatives of Deloitte - JoAnne Anderson and Marilyn Mucha and club president Chris Cheeseman.  Through efforts of club members including Eden Hampson, over 200 bicycles have been supplied to Brightview students.

Everett Piper's  message to the club as of September 10, 2008: ( more pictures in his photo journal - see right)

They're going great, i really don't think that i could be happier!
My host family is really nice, they have told me that they're going to do lots with me.
In school I really don't understand whats goin on but there's a guy who sits beside me and he's my friend.
I feel like my class has really accepted me in and everyone is really nice to me.
Umm... german is coming is coming along, especially now it's at a point that I can have some pretty basic conversations with other people as long as they speak slowly with, but i'm practicing a lot.
I'd say the only thing right now that isn't good is I broke my collarbone on saturday!! it's not too bad though,
it just means that I can't play with my soccer team, and volleyball team anymore (and gym and guitar), but i'm going to start painting instead (a little worried about that!) I really like all of the other inbound exchange students here and we all got along really well.  I'm excited for upcoming events!  So, that's a little summary of how i've been.  I also had two weeks of language camp but I think i learned slower there then i have here back in my town with my host family.  But, I have no complaints, and i'm really just having a good time.

PRESIDENTS' ROLL GETS BRUSHED UP!
Jelto Schiebel noticed a while ago that some of our recent past presidents were getting a little tarnished.  Well, not the past presidents themselves, but their names on our club's past presidents' roll.  New names  have now been secured and Dr. Schiebel has affixed the names on the plaque of honor.  Thanks for your work on this and on many other club projects, Jelto!

St. Francis Xavier student Everett Piper, is bound for Langenlois, Austria for the 2008/09 school term.  Everett hails from Dawson Creek, B.C. but has been going to school here in Edmonton to pursue his interest in soccer.   Our club has a connection with Everett in another way. His Mom, Sandra Piper was a guest speaker at our Fork it Over event in January to support Sorrentino's Compassion House as she was a resident there during her recent cancer treatment.

Everett is a bright young man who is ambitous and energetic.  He has volunteered along side Mayfield Rotarians at the YMCA pancake breakfast  and  Capital City Clean-up  events. He leaves for Austria on Aug 4.

We will have a blog of his trip experiences and hopefully some photos too.
