Marilyn Mucha is a native Edmontonian, the eldest of a family of three whose parents were entrepreneurs in the trucking business.  As a third generation Ukrainian Canadian, Marilyn was close to both sets of grandparents who were farmers and coal miners just south of Edmonton. Her first spoken language was Ukrainian and she also studied Ukrainian in a private school after regular classes.  After attending dance classes for a few year, she auditioned for the Ukrianian Shumka Dancers and began a semi-professional sideline of performing with the troupe for 13 years which included travel to Japan, Hong Kong, through out the US and Canada.and for the Queen on 2 occasions.  Marilyn graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Accounting and has one son â¿¢ TJ, who attends the UoA in engineering..

 

Her working career included working in the family business and with an oilfield service company before articling with Thorne Riddell ( now KPMG) and transferring to the Computer services division for a total of 14 years.  An opportunity then followed for  3 years with an American Software firm where she was Canadian Sales Manager working out of a home office and traveling extensively across Canada.  She has been with Deloitte & Touche since 1998 and is presently a Senior Account Manager selling the consulting, forensic accounting and risk services of this firm to the Public Sector.

 

Volunteering has been a mainstay for Marilyn as she has been involved with many organizations including Alberta Lung Association, 2005 Brier Board, Ukrianian Shumka Dancers Alumni Association, and 2007 World Men's Curling Championship, Santa's Anonymous and the Hope Mission.

 

She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield since 1998 and served as its President during the 2003-2004 Rotary year. She also served as International Service Director and Membership Chair and has been a host parent for several Rotary Youth Exchange Students. She is a Paul Harris fellow as well as a Benefactor and currently serves the District in the portfolio of Membership Chair. As a result of her active Rotary involvement, she has awarded her with the "Above and Beyond" and "Four Avenues of Service" awards.

 

Marilyn loves to travel and has managed to incorporate some of that travel with Rotary.  She has attended 2 RI conferences, Buenos Aires and Brisbane and is planning to be at this year's conference in Copenhagen.  In addition, she was in Africa in 2002 to vet 2 major International Service projects in Uganda and Tanzania and is hoping to participate in Polio Immunization day in India sometime in the next 16 months.

 

She enjoys cooking and gardening as well as golf that she has taken up in the last few years to be able to keep up with her father, son and fiancée Len Chanasyk
