Fellow Rotarians,

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the installation of the Board of Directors of Rotary Club of Houston Skyline. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 13th from 5-8 pm at Bad Astronaut Brewing (1519 Fulton St, Houston, TX 77009)As President, my priorities will be data-driven service, placemaking, and Rotary's Seventh Area of Focus - Supporting the Environment, which align with Rotary International's 2023-2024 theme of “Create Hope in the World”:

  1. Data-driven service: The theme of “Create Hope in the World” emphasizes the importance of taking action to make a positive impact in our communities. Our focus on data-driven service means that we are using data to inform our decisions and strategies to maximize the impact of our service projects. By using data, we can ensure that our club's service projects are addressing the most pressing needs in our community and making a tangible difference in people's lives.
  2. Placemaking: Creating hope in the world involves creating communities that are safe, welcoming, and vibrant. Our focus on placemaking means that we are working to create public spaces that promote community engagement and well-being. By enhancing public spaces, we can create a sense of community ownership and pride that fosters a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
  3. Supporting the Environment: The environment is a crucial component of creating hope in the world. Our focus on Rotary's Seventh Area of Focus - Supporting the Environment means that we are working to address environmental challenges that threaten the health and well-being of people and communities. By promoting sustainable practices and protecting natural resources, we are helping to create a more hopeful future for generations to come.
The venue alone is incentive enough to attend! Chris Fall and Rocky Keener, co-founders of Bad Astronaut, were also among the first workers of Karbach Brewing, a pioneering brewery in Houston that was sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.  Bad Astronaut  is housed in a large 36,000-square-foot warehouse that was constructed in 1932. From the 1970s through the mid-2000s, it housed the Texas Screw Factory, which produced screws for oil wells and other gear. The brewery features 30 taps in all, including guest taps featuring beers from other brewers, beer cocktails, and wine. The massive taproom is filled with tables and high-tops, as well as free-play games like cornhole, foosball, and pool. The origin of the moniker Bad Astronaut, of course, includes beer. The owners were drinking one night when they began chatting about what Houston loves most, including the Astros and astronauts. They came up with an "anti-hero astronaut" character who went through all the training but, when it came time to travel to space, decided he didn't really want to go after all. All of the can labels portray this bad astronaut getting into mischief, such as being chased by someone in a DeLorean on a volcano.

In addition, we will be holding a unique fundraiser at the installation called "Rent a Skyliner," a "skills auction," where, instead of physical products, we will be auctioning off the skills and services of our members to the highest bidders. For instance, a dentist could offer a teeth cleaning, a golf instructor could provide private golf lessons, a teacher could offer tutoring lessons, a musician could offer music lessons, a limo owner could offer a night out, a web designer could offer a simple template website, and an artist could offer an individual or family portrait, an accountant could offer services such as bookkeeping or tax preparation, and a lawyer could provide legal consultations or document preparation services. Additionally, Skyliners with connections could offer lunch with an athlete/celebrity, a private tour of City Hall or NASA, a ride in a fire truck, dinner at a local politician’s home, or an after-hours tour of a local museum with the curator. You don't want to miss this opportunity to bid on Houston's most talented!

I look forward to seeing you at our installation!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Ed
