The Zambia Nutrition Program Mission Statement:

To eliminate malnutrition and stunting by empowering families with clean water, healthy nutrition resources and nutrition education.  Check out the new activities…

The program focus is the child's first 1,000 days of life and is currently working in the villages of Sindowe and Mukwalantia.

The program follows the model of partnering with rural communities for sustainability and to establish 3 priorities:

  • Clean water for drinking, water for community gardens
    • Partnering with local district officials and non-profits
  • Nutritious gardens
    • Partnering with local district officials
  • Nutrition education for new mothers
    • Conducted by local volunteers

The following updates were shared by the LER Zambia team; Dr. Chuck Erickson, Chris Gay and Shari McCright;

  • A local Zambian, Dorothy, was hired to coordinate nutrition activities in the rural villages.
  • Weekly calls with local Zambia coordinators, growth data collector and Dr. Chuck in Lincoln
  • The addition of a solar powered incubator to provide eggs, supplementing diets with protein
  • In progress, the purchase of dairy cattle to provide milk for the children's diet.
  • The village of Sindowe has completed the canal where the water can be used to irrigate community gardens
  • A new borehole for clean drinking water,  with the help of local officials and the non-profit SAM, in Sindowe.

A big thank you to the important growth data work, which includes our own LER member, Chris Gay!

We thank everyone for your continued support and care.
