Kathie Phillips - Hearts United for Animals

Kathie enjoyed 45 years in her career as an educator in Hahn, Germany and Lincoln, Nebraska, and later as a Community Learning Center Administrator and curriculum specialist in Lincoln before her retirement in 2021  Throughout those years, she and her husband, Don, were volunteers at Hearts United for Animals.  She currently volunteers as the Education Director at Hearts United for Animals, and she serves on the Executive Director Team there.  Kathie and her husband have served as therapeutic foster parents for a number of special needs dogs from Hearts United for Animals, parenting more than 50 dogs throughout the years.  (They currently have 11 dogs in their care...blind, deaf, serious heart conditions, insulin-dependent diabetics) They also foster orphaned litters of kittens that are turned in to HUA, caring for them and socializing them until they are old enough to be spay/neutered and adopted into loving homes.  To date, they have fostered more than 40 kittens. Kathie says that her work with animals is more than a hobby....it is a passion that is woven into the fabric of her life.
Lucas Sabalka
Lincoln East Rotary Club heard from Dr. Lucas Sabalka, Energy Specialist, Citizens’ Climate Lobby about what can be done to make changes to our climate.

Lucas pointed out that if you look at Rotary’s Four Way Test apply it to the common values for climate change it looks a lot like this:  Truth: we’ll get to that, Fair: climate change most harms those less fortunate, Goodwill: this will take all of us working together, and Beneficial: for health, economy, water, plants, animals, Nebraska, ag, peace, democracy, transportation, and you can continue to add to this list.

Sum Fun Picnic - July 21, 2023

Sum Fun Picnic - July 21, 2023

We will be helping with the Sum Fun Picnic on July 21st.  We will need volunteers to help cook the hot dogs, cook the beans, set-up, serve the food, and clean-up afterwards.  This picnic is held at Antelope Park's Auld Pavilion.  A sign-up sheet will be forthcoming to sign up in the other areas.  Thank you for doing what Rotarians do -- "SERVE ABOVE SELF."

Rotary Reflections
I once heard about a farmer whose corn took the blue-ribbon prize at the state fair year after year.  He always shared his best seed with his neighbors.  When asked why, he replied, “it’s a matter of self-protection.  The wind picks up the pollen and swirls it from field to field.  If my neighbors were to grow inferior corn, cross-pollination would steadily degrade the quality of my corn.  Therefore, I see that they get the best seed.”
