In-Person Meeting - March 17, 2021

Please join us at the Pizza Ranch on March 17th at 11:45 am for our regular meeting.

Pizza Ranch is located at 8420 Lexington Ave.  Meal is chicken and pizza buffet.  Cost at door is $11.48 for adults (includes tax and drink).  Senior price is $10.44.  The expectation is for guests to eat there since we don't pay charge for private room.  An alternative might be to buy a To-Go box or frozen breakfast pizzas at $6.99.  Duane Tappe says the food is good.  Our speaker that day will be Kyle McGowan.  Kyle is currently an Ambassador for Nebraska Council of School Administrators.  Prior to that he was superintendent of Crete Public Schools.  He will be sharing with us about the "I LOVE Public Schools."

President's Message

Lincoln East Rotary Club

On page 12 of Rotary for March 2021 is a really nice picture describing Rotary’s new official cause of Protecting the Environment.  This focus is on rural America and as noted last week, the lack of sanitation affects the health of rural residents, often poor, people of color, and marginalized communities most.  Please see page 38 of Rotary, March 2021 for Catherine Coleman Flowers article from her work as a newly appointed “genius grant” recipient.  You probably all noticed that the state has sued AltEn regarding the ethanol plant in Mead.

Board Meeting - March 10, 2021

10:30 AM via ZOOM

Please look for their invite from Wayne Casper for this board meeting, which will be followed by our regular meeting.  A separate invite will be set up for the regular meeting.

Rotary Projects

Today we viewed four short videos that told us about many of the Projects that Rotary International and Rotarians have worked on to eradicate or make a difference in helping improve.

Polio:  A video that was made in 2015 told us about how bad polio was back in 1952 when children were staying away from crowds, schools were closed and theaters were closed.  It makes one think about what has happened in 2020 with our COVID-19 pandemic.  In 1988 there was 350,000 cases and in 2015 there was only 74 cases.  It is very complex and difficult in the countries that still have the poliovirus to get the children vaccinated, but in 2015 over 2.5 billion children were vaccinated.  We are 99.9% eradicated.  Hopefully, we can get those children in the two countries that are left vaccinated and there may be no more polio.

Zambia:  A video of local dancers promoting Nutrition in Zambia held one evening at Plymouth Congregational Church.

Water:  In Peru 8 million people lack clean water, but thanks to Rotary International they are now able to filter their water for consumption.  Previously they got their water from wells which was undrinkable and made the children ill.  With Rotary and their partners helping to get filtering systems for them these problems have improved and the children are quite healthy.  Rotary doing GOOD in the WORLD!

The last video showed the many different projects that Rotary International and Rotarians are doing around the world and in their own local communities.

Thank you Wayne for sharing these videos!
