Growing Together & Supporting our LGBTQ+ Community

November 9, 2022

Topic:  "Growing Together and Supporting Our LGBTQ+ Community"

Speaker:  Aryn Huck

Aryn Huck (they/he) is the community organizer with OutNebraska and a long-time young queer advocate in Nebraska.  OutNebraska is a statewide nonprofit that works to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ Nebraskans through advocacy, celebration, and education.  In their work, Aryn helps LGBTQ+ people and their allies become informed members of the community and advocates for change.  They also live in Lincoln with their partner JD and their very large, one-eyed, orange cat named Moody.

Resignation - Jerry Christensen
Below is a letter to the Board of Lincoln East Rotary Club from Jerry D. Christensen:

For more than 20 years I have been a member of Lincoln East Rotary Club.  I have greatly enjoyed being a part of this important service organization, serving in multiple capacities.  At the end of October, I will have completed four months of my presidential term.  Last year when I accepted the President-Elect position, I had no idea that my health would deteriorate the way it has.  This month my doctor has referred me for Hospice srvices through Tabitha, and I started receiving those services this past week.  My Interstitial Lung Disease has progressed to the point that I am no longer able to continue as President of Lincoln East Rotary.

My resignation is immediate.  I will continue to be an active member as long as I am able.  It is my recommendation that the board create a selection committee from past presidents to nominate a replacement to be approved by the board and then by the members.  I am sincerely sorry for the problem this may cause the club, but I am sure you understand.  I wish you all the best, as you go forward in serving our community and around the world.

November Rotary Foundation Month

Here is an opportunity for members of Lincoln East Rotary to support the Rotary International Foundation.  Remember money given to the Foundation comes back to use within three years as our District Grants and also helps with the Global grants.  If you would like to donate to the R.I. Foundation, please contact Minnie Stephens, our R.I. Foundation Chair.

Rotary Reflections
The United States long tradition of staying out of the struggles among European nations had lasted for over a century by the time of the First World War.  In 1915 though the German sinking of the SS Lusitania roused the country to anger.  By 1917 the pressure to join the fray became unstoppable.  In January of that year British intelligence intercepted the ‘Zimmerman telegram’ which revealed that Germany was planning unrestricted submarine warfare and U.S. ships would be considered fair game.  The telegram also proposed an anti-US alliance between Germany and Mexico if the U.S. declared war.  Within days the Housatonic, an American liner had been sunk off the Italian coast.  The United States broke off diplomatic relations with Germany and by April America had entered the war.  President Woodrow Wilson addressed Congress on April 2, 1917, seeking a declaration of war.  In his speech he said, “There is one choice we cannot make, we are incapable of making: we will not choose the path of submission and suffer the most sacred right of our nation and our people to be ignored or violated.  The wrongs against which we now array ourselves are no common wrongs: they cut to the very roots of human life.”
