Clay Ehlers, Area District Governor, joined us today hoping to visit with our speaker from last week. Clay was one week late to visit with Bill Harvey. Thus, one of our members asked Clay how he got into Rotary -- so here is Clay's story. Clay was in his mid 20's married and a small child. Clay wanted to do something that where he could participate and serve within his community. It had to be something separate from his church and work. He started out helping Lincoln South Rotary with their Food Drive and picking up trash along the highway. He was not a member of the club at the time. He felt that he was doing something within his community. It made him feel more like an adult. Clay did join Lincoln South Rotary later and has been a member for 16 years. Clay told us that he did take a one-year leave from Rotary to live in India. He commanded a Call Center in India where most of the workers had MBA's. It was an experience that he won't forget because the "sounds, smells, and everything else is strong" in India. He has made many friends through his time in India and the person whom replaced him is still commanded the Call Center. He learned a different life style while working in India and it helped him to develop and change as an adult. Clay served as President twice for Lincoln South and has been an Area Governor for a few years working with several different clubs, including helping the Living Spirits (an evening club) get started, but changed with the other Area District Governor so he could help Lincoln East and Crete clubs. The Crete club is a small club who loves to do community activities and projects. Clay was asked about why he hasn't been a District Governor -- answer is that he has worked for IBM in the same role for 22 years and IBM was brought out by another company and in the next two years he will need to make a decision to stay with IBM or make a change. Besides, Clay has a young daughter who is in the middle of high school and he would like to see her off to college before accepting the opportunity to become a District Governor. Yes, he has been asked, but he has his own personal reasons for now. Thanks Clay for sharing! |
