Coping During a Pandemic

Several of our members reported on how they have been coping during the pandemic and here are their stories for your reading pleasure. Thanks everyone for sharing and hopefully those who were not at the meeting will find some encouragement in how we have been coping with the pandemic. I am sure many of us can relate to what has been said.

President's Message

Lincoln East Rotary Club

Our program this week was an opportunity to hear from many of our members on their experiences coping with the isolation of the pandemic. It was so nice to hear from everyone and it helped us feel more connected. What amazed me is how resilient our members are. They accept the situation we’re in and make the best of it with their families staying connected with Zoom or Facebook or whatever. One member has even taken up painting. We all long for the return of the post-pandemic “normal” although we don’t know what that will be. For now, we’re awaiting our turn for the vaccinations and staying safe.

Scholarship Update

Lillie Larsen, our Scholarship Chair, reported that the four students who received the $1,000 scholarships, which is given at $500.00 per semester, told her they did have success despite online classes and being careful not to get the virus. Three of these students will return for the second semester, and will receive the other $500. One of the students decided that she would not return until the fall semester. When she received her schedule it was mostly all online and she preferred in-person classes. We, Rotarians agreed with the committee that it would be wise to hold on to her $500 and give it to her in the fall.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Giving

Wayne Casper informed us on Wednesday that our Thanksgiving fundraiser for City Mission was $1,040.00 and Christmas fundraiser for Salvation Army was $1,310.00. Great going Rotarians!

Happy Dollars for Polio Plus

Reminder our goal for 2020-2021 is: $1800.00

So far this Rotary year we have collected $952.00. We still have a ways to go, so lets work on meeting or exceeding our goal of $1,800.00.

Thanks to the following for helping us meet our goal: Gordon Bair, Wayne Casper, Dean Douglas, Darrel Huenergardt, Al Burdick and Mike Ahrens. We were able to collect $125.00 toward our goal.

Since we are going virtual during the month of December, you can send your Polio Plus dollars in a check made out to Lincoln East Rotary and send it to our Treasurer, Dick Cumming, 2312 S. 75th Street, Lincoln, NE 68506.

Even with the vaccine we continue to keep all of our teachers, school officials, and students, EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.

If you know of any of our members you would like for us to mention who are ill or need a prayer, please let Greg know and we will put it in the SPOKE.
