President's Message
Welcome to the 2020-21 Rotary year!  RI President Holger Knaack chose “Rotary Opens Opportunities” as the theme for Rotary International this year.  He believes that our acts of service generate opportunities for those we serve and enable us as Rotarians to live a more meaningful life.  He encourages us to be open to changing the way we carry out our goals and work to attract and support young people with new ideas and energy to enable Rotary to continue to thrive.  This year will certainly be an opportunity for the Lincoln East Rotary Club to continue to recruit young members to meet this challenge.  Then, we’ll need to engage them in the service projects of our Club and identify new projects that support their ideals.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Dennis Duckworth and Dick Cumming for all of their mentoring and support in preparing for the 2020-21 Rotary year.  Both have met with me and answered many emails and phone calls.  The same is true of Jerry Christensen and Minnie Stephens.  Gene Frederick has given me tips all year as he set up for meetings.  Chris Klingenberg has advised me on service projects.  Duane Tappe has helped me to get to service events and figure out what to do once there.  Paul Horton and Barry Stelk have advised me on problem solving issues.  Thanks so much to all of you!

I’ll be doing the Club Health Survey when we get together next to see what we can do to improve and to identify goals of members.  I’m looking forward to working with all of you to help our Club recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Sincerely in Rotary, Sue Schuerman, President
Lincoln East Grant for Food Bank of Lincoln

On 6/26/20, the Rotary District 5650 Grants Committee informed us that Rotary International approved our grant project for the Food Bank of Lincoln.  This is very good news for our Club, for the Food Bank of Lincoln, and for the many people the Food Bank serves.  We’ll be working on a presentation to the Food Bank once the funds have transferred.   Dennis Duckworth was instrumental in helping prepare the application and that assistance is greatly appreciated.

Rotary and Racism

Black Lives Matter, Anti-racism, White supremacy and Protests.  These words we hear every day if we tune in to radio or television.   Why is this?  When Barack Obama was elected to the US presidency, I had thought that racism in our country was no longer an issue.  We have television and movie celebrities, athletes, a Supreme Court justice, doctors and lawyers that are of African-American descent.  Occasionally, I would come across a bigot, but few of my close friends exhibited racist expressions.  However, during this past decade I have become aware that it wasn’t over.  Code words like “States rights” and take back our nation, began to alert me to the fact that underlying racism still exists.  The loss of Black young men at the hands of police officers has has added to change in my thinking.

The fact that we have not overcome the problem has been confirmed by a young African-American friend of mine who has shared with me his perceptions and fears.  For example, when he goes into a room, he looks around to see who is there that might harm him or that when he goes into  a bar or other venue he seats himself in a location enabling him to see who is coming in.  This tells so much about the fear that exists in the minds of so many black folks.  He also tells of racist experiences he has experienced.

I invited him to become a Rotarian sometime back, but he declined, because he  spends so much time around white folks where he has to pretend to be one of them.  He cannot be himself.  In other words, he needs to let down.

He met with 4 members of our church study group and shared these insights and other racist experiences.  I had asked him to invite some of his Black friends, but explained that it takes time to build up trust, before they would feel comfortable having a dialog.

This discussion and hearing of others with similar feelings has made me understand where African-Americans are coming from.  Their fears, although may be appear irrational, to them are very real and we need to hear them and recognize their fears.    Here is the problem, given the discomfort that our Black friends being open with us, how do we engage in discussions.  I don’t have the answer, but I believe Rotary should be on the front line in the effort to eliminate racism.

Rotary is dedicated to making the world a better place, one component of which is peace and conflict resolution.  Our 4-Way test lends to this theme, “building good will, beneficial to all etc.   I sincerely hope that this essay will result in our club attack the racism issue.

Rotary Year 2020-2021 Participation
It is time for you, as members of Lincoln East Rotary Club, to start thinking about your monthly service to the Club for 2020-2021.  When we return to in-person meetings we will be needing Greeters, Assistant Sargent-in-Arms, Cashiers, and Program Chairs.  These will be done on a monthly basis.  As we are currently doing virtual/outdoor meetings, we need someone to step up for Program Chair starting in July.  If you are interested, please contact Minnie Stephens, Club Administer, at 402-466-1545 or minniemouse1041@windstream.net, or Sue Schuerman, incoming President, at 702-524-7199 or sunshine5254824@twc.com.
