Shirley Wichman told us about how you can find some hidden gems in the State of Nebraska -- get a Nebraska Passport and explore the state.
The History of the Nebraska Passport is in its 12th year. The Passport is different every year. All stops are picked through an application process. There is a variety of destinations and the stops are geographical diverse. With the diversity of the stops and variety this gives the visitor a great experience and they learn about customer service through each stop.
Lincoln East Rotary Club award $1,000 scholarships to four high school graduates from Lancaster County who are planning to attend college in Nebraska. The winners are:
Nadim Al-Ramahy – Nadim graduates from North Star High School. Nadim plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an engineering major. Nadim said that his uncle, who is a mechanical engineer at Kawasaki, spared his interest in becoming an engineer. Nadim’s high school counselor expressed strong confidence in Nadim and expects him to be one of the top students graduating from UNL.
William Cao – William graduates from North Star High School. William plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying in the Pro-Health Program with the intention of becoming a registered Nurse. He said that going to college will help him achieve his lifetime goals and beyond. William has been active in Upward Bound throughout high school, and participated in volunteer activities including gardening at an elementary school and the Adopt-A-Highway program to pick up litter.
Makenzi Hansen – Makenzi graduates from Lincoln East High School. Makenzi plans to major in computer science at Nebraska Wesleyan University this fall. Makenzi has always been fascinated with computers and thinks that in the age of technology, she is called to study computer science. In addition to a full high school schedule, when she was 15, Makenzi organized and started her own nonprofit business called Makenzi’s Closet. She collects and launders used clothing that she donates to underprivileged people across Lincoln.
Ella Hendricksen – Ella graduates from Lincoln Southeast High School. Ella plans to study at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is the first member of her family to attend college. Ella volunteered at Bryan Medical Center weekly before the pandemic and plans to become a pediatrician. She is passionate about medicine, because with training in medicine she can have an impact on other people’s lives.
These four students receiving scholarships have demonstrated the Rotary motto: “Service Above Self,” besides exemplifying humanitarian service and high ethical standards which is part of Rotary. Lincoln East Rotary has been giving out scholarships for the past 20 years and looks forward to continuing to help deserving students in the future.

I have been very pleased with the involvement of our membership in the online session. And, grateful to Rotary District 5520 for inviting us to join in their sessions.
During the various online sessions, in addition to Nebraska and Iowa, we have met participants from New Mexico, Texas, California, and also from Canada.
Our members have indicated that they feel they have engaged during the online sessions. The idea of multiple districts has introduced them to new ideas, and an understanding of different challenges.

As Shirley Wichman wrapped up her presentation this past Wednesday, several of our members reminisced with her about visits to locations in Nebraska. What fun it was to listen to their recollections of these visits. So, when I received my Rotary magazine yesterday I was primed and ready for the article on Route 66. My husband, Raymond Records, loved Route 66. He drove the entire route and had great stories about that trip. He had a book on Route 66 and would regularly recount information about one of the stops.
So, when we moved from Elkhorn, NE to Las Vegas, NV in early 2000, I saw that we’d be driving through Kingman, AZ. I made sure our motel was on Route 66 and it was. It was also on the main railroad train route through Kingman with lots of track and train changes. Ray got little sleep that night as the trains just kept coming through. Scenic it was, but no sleep for Ray. Reminiscing is great but things change sometimes.

Even with the vaccine we continue to keep all of our teachers, school officials, and students, EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
