Bob Taylor is a Region 36 End Polio Now Coordinator. Having been a Polio survivor, with complete left-side paralysis, he has contributed to advancing Rotary’s Polio effort since joining Rotary in 2015.
Kathy and Blake Collingsworth shared with us about Josh the Otter came into beginning and how it has a connection with Rotary. They shared about the different programs they have available for children.
How Josh the Otter begin:
On a warm spring day in June during a family gathering at our home Joshua slipped out of sight for just a few short moments. He was quickly discovered in the backyard pool, unconscious and unresponsive. Family immediately started CPR and he was life flighted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. After three days of lying by his side in the hospital Joshua was taken off life support and passed away shortly thereafter.
After being paused for a couple years, we are having a Strike Out Polio event again this year. As in the past, we have always opened this up to all Lincoln and surrounding groups. Attached is the flyer for the game and how to buy tickets.
Details: Game June 10th, Friday night Saltdogs game with fireworks afterwards; $18 club level ticket, $9 going back to your club for Polio Plus; all tickets bought online and track name of person to give credit to respected club; Link on the flyer will bring you to the purchase counter.

Several years ago, more years than I care to remember, when my oldest son, Ben was about 4-month-old (He is now almost 50) we drove to San Diego. We had a little Pinto, and Ben’s bed was set up in the back on top of all the luggage, and his nose was just a couple of inches from the roof. After my meetings we did the tourist things, including Lion Country Safari. It’s a place where animals are kept quite out in the open. One group of animals were not put out in the open, but were in an immensely large fenced off area. Just almost a natural is it could be without giving them complete freedom. Along the fence were paths. Well worn, hard beaten paths. As we watched it was very evident why. There at one end of the fence the animal would begin to run or trot all the way along the fence to the other end. Turn around and run all the way back. Back and forth, back and forth, perpetually, expending a great deal of energy, working very hard, and getting nowhere, because he had no worthwhile goal.

This was our Teacher of the Year in 2019 for the month of November. Since that time we have not honored teachers and hopefully we can do this once again -- maybe in a different format.
Even with the vaccine, we continue to keep all of our teachers, school officials, and students, EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
