Foster Care Closet - Leigh Esau

Foster Care Closet - Leigh Esau

Leigh Esau is a product of the foster care system.  Having spent the first 7 years of her life in foster care she knew early in her life she wanted to give back to those who would follow.  After she and her husband fostered over 20 children during their 13 years as foster parents she felt an urgency to change how it looks and feels for children who enter into foster care.  16 years ago she founded the Foster CARE Closet to help provide clothing to children as they enter into foster care.  It has evolved into so much more from those early years.  What began in her basement has grown into a statewide organization that serves in partnership with DHHS to help children transition into foster care.

Leigh lives in Lincoln Nebraska with her husband of 37 years and their 2 adult children and 4 teenagers.

President Message
I recently came across a story written by a lady living in Manhattan where, as a child, her mother walked her to school four blocks away every morning and then walked home with her again in the afternoon.  One hard winter her mother came down with pneumonia and she had to go to school and return home by herself.  On the way home the second day she fell on some ice while crossing the street and at that moment a car skidded toward her and came within inches of her before it stopped.  The driver helped her up and she managed to get home, but she didn’t tell her mother because she didn’t want her to worry.
