Makenzi Hansen, one of $1,000 scholarship winners spoke to our club. Makenzi graduated from Lincoln East High School and plans to major in computer science at Nebraska Wesleyan starting this fall. This school year, Makenzi, did all her schooling through ZOOM, or on the computer. She did not make an appearance at East High until her graduation day. Makenzi was raised by her grandparents, Rita and Greg McClure, along with her two sisters and one brother. Her oldest sister is a teacher at Lincoln Northeast High School, and this year was a challenge. Her brother is in the Marines and just returned home from being stationed in Jordan. Her other sister, has not quite decided what she wants to do yet, but continues to work. Her grandmother, Rita, was a school nurse for LPS and retired three years ago, but was called back this past year and plans to continue to work as a nurse. This summer she will be working as a nurse for the Bright Lights program at Holmes Elementary. Grandfather, Greg, worked for Burlington Northern.
Makenzi will be living on the Wesleyan campus during her education. She happens to have a full ride for college, which she is happy about. She also studied French all four years of high school and one day like to go to France and get into gaming. Makenzi enjoys playing video games, and would maybe like to do some programming with video games and see them through to fruition.
When she was 15 Makenzi started a non-profit called Makenzi's Closet. She collects slightly used clothing, washing them, and either donates them to underprivileged people across Lincoln. She sometimes gets paid for those clothes and so far she has raised for herself about $4,500.
Volunteers are needed to help raise the flags on June 11th and take them down on June 14th at the Veterans Memorial Garden, Antelope Park. If you are able to do one of these volunteer jobs, please contact Duane Tappe at dra.tappe@gmail.com or call 402-686-0310. Thank you in advance for your service in getting those flags up and taken down.
We're nearing the end of my year as Rotary President for the Lincoln East Rotary Club. It has indeed been quite the experience. I'm so grateful to Dennis for his mentoring and that of the other members of the Board of Directors. They have been so helpful and supportive to this "newbie" this past year and I'm so very grateful. Also the regular members have been supportive whether we meet via Zoom of in person and no matter what kind of lunch we have. You have all been THE BEST and I'm so glad to be a fellow member. The District (particularly Nicki) has also been very supportive. Thank you all so much.
If you have not signed up yet and would like to share with someone who's name is listed once on a single month or you would like to take an "open" month, please contact either Minnie Stephens or Darrel Huenergadt. Thank you.
Since we are meeting in-person make sure you have your "Happy Dollars" ready. For those who still want to contribute if you are unable to attend, please send your check to Dick Cumming.

Even with the vaccine we continue to keep all of our teachers, school officials, and students, EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
If you know of any of our members you would like for us to mention who are ill or need a prayer, please let Greg know and we will put it in the SPOKE.
