"NO MEETINGS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!"
President Dennis Message
Rotarians:  Happy Easter to everyone!   I hope that each of you will be able to celebrate in some manner that brings some peace to your hearts.

On Wednesday, about 14 of us were able to connect on-line via Zoom.  While there was a delay in starting this (operator error by me) it was fun to see everyone’s face, and hear stories about how we are surviving this pandemic.  I would like to do this again on April 22nd, and do some socialization.  Between now and then I will improve my Zoom skill set and we should have the link to this meeting in next week’s Spoke.

On Wednesday we were able to recite the Four Way Test, and to give birthday greetings to Sue Schuerman, Gene Frederick, Gene Roth, Dave Caudy, Tom Roper, and Lyle Schoen.   Other updates are the moving of the Salute to Business luncheon to June 30th, and that the “Cost of Freedom” sculpture has been repaired and is displayed nearer the Veteran’s Hospital, East of 70th Street.  Drive in to see it, parking is available, and you can see the sponsorship plaque.  Finally, our Club has nominated Wayne Casper for the Cadwallader award, which is presented in our district to honor a district member who has significantly contributed to the Rotary avenues of service.

Please think about the service opportunities we all have, donating our time, our talents, our money, our friendship.  Continue to be safe and think of others.  I look forward to seeing you again on the 22nd and have a Happy Easter.

Dennis

Who Taught Us to Wash our Hands

Hand washing has not always been a part of our culture, not even with the health profession.  It’s hard to believe, but it took a courageous physician to teach the medical profession to wash hands prior to doing surgery or delivering babies.  In 1847 Austria, an obstetrician/gynecologist by the name of Ignaz Semmelweis noted that the incidence of puerperal fever or childbirth fever as it was known, was greater in the ward where the physicians and medical students performed the deliveries than the ward where the mid-wives were in charge.  He also observed that the former came directly from the autopsy morgue to the operating room without washing their hands.  To us today, this seems incredible.  How could they be so stupid?  But this was 30 years before Pasteur discovered that bacteria caused disease.  Semmelweis proceeded to have his doctors and students wash their hands and soak their hands in chlorinated lime solution prior to and between each procedure.  This resulted in a significant drop in infections.  WOW, you would think this research would result in an immediate change of medical practice.  NOT.  He was so discredited that he reacted to this criticism and eventually this stress led him to be committed to an asylum, where he died of an infection similar to the one he had dealt with so effectively.

Even scientists can be reluctant to change their ways, in spite of good scientific evidence.  It is no wonder that lay folks might do the same.  I suspect that the anti-vaccine folks will not change when a COVID-19 vaccine comes out.  Perish the thought.  Thanks to wise Rotarians, we have been able to eliminate most of the polio in the world with financial contributions to Polio Plus.

Cost of Freedom Update
Duane Tappe (standing near the hands) reports that the hands have been repaired and on display on the Veterans Administration grounds.  A plaque has been added acknowledging those who help contribute to get those hands.  The location is no longer on the entrance at 70th street, but it has been relocated up the hill at the north entrance.  Folks can get out to see it better now as there is close by parking.  It is located near an honor plaque (picture shown on the left).  Also the plaque is shown below too.

Satellites

Sarah Parcak and the secrets of the satellites

Inspired in part by Indiana Jones, space archaeologist Sarah Parcak uses futuristic airborne technology to unearth the treasures of the past
Sarah Parcak approaches the towering 40-foot-long creature. Its flashing rows of serrated teeth are built to grab flesh and crush bones. If it could sense we’re near, it would be upon us in seconds.

“There she is,” whispers Parcak. “Thank you for indulging me.”

Something from the Past
Do you recognize anyone in this photo taken at the picnic in 2003?

Lincoln Northeast/East Rotary Club use to hold annual picnics each year.  Spouses were invited and usually provided some of the salads, and other dishes.  The meat and drink were always furnished by the Rotary Club.  Other family members were invited to join the fun (which included grandkids).  Good fellowship, good food, and lots of laughs.  Some of current members are in this photo -- hope you can spot them.

You will be seeing more of the past thanks to Wayne Casper and his library of photos.
Wellness
Wellness Chairman Greg Schnasse has requested information in regard to any illness by club members and/or their family members.
Greg’s contacts:
Phone: 402-440-9917

Greg has contacted these people and he are some of the responses.  Please keep the following in your thoughts and prayers:

Mike Carr said he is doing about middle of the road.  Really no change from when Greg last spoke to him.  Going to Dr.'s and doing his daily PT exercises.  They still like there new living quarters at the Knoll's Retirement.  He will try and make it to Rotary, once we get up and running again.

Dale Lloyd -- Greg had to leave a voicemail.  Once he gets in touch he will give us more information.

Gene and Barbara Roth --  Greg left a  message with their daughter-in-law, as Gene could not come to the phone at the time.  He got home Monday of this week.  Gene's daughter-in-law will have Gene call Greg back.  Greg did speak with him last Friday.  We have more updated information hopefully for our next SPOKE.

Greg visited with Ben Martin, just to visit with him, and of course, he is not working at his office currently, but his finding plenty to keep him busy at home.

If you know of any of our members you would like for us to mention who are ill or need a prayer, please let Greg know and we will put it in the SPOKE.
